Had a metallic noise develop over the weekend from the front crank pulley area, noticed the PAS pulley appeared to wobble at idle.

Stripped out and found this ;-

The hole is oval (might not be to clear on pics), The 944 tech book quotes 210nm torque for the gear wheel to crank M16x 1.5mm bolt........ any thoughts if should be put in with locktite on the thread ?

cheers

Derrick

I have never used loctite on this - at 210Nm you shouldnt need it I guess.
Its one of those bolts I wonder about after tightening but havent had one come loose yet.

If you need to borrow a flywheel lock let me know.

Cheers rich, any idea what size dia the stub of the crankshaft is that it fits on ?

I'm pretty sure it doesnt actually sit on the stub. I dont think that the stub protrudes from the balance belt gear. In other words I think the pulley sits directly against this gear which would make sense as the whole lot must push against the oil pump drive gear.

Bear in mind I'm going by memory though!!

you have about 5mm of the end of the crank that it appears to fit onto

You haven't included phots of the big washer that goes on the bolt - which, if I remember rightly, locates the pulley properly when it's tight. Mine did come loose however I was using it to lock the engine as I took the clutch and flywheel off. Having refitted it and torqued it to 210Nm, I can't see it coming off again, and it's been fine since...

Also, be careful when you tighten the whole back up again if you haven't taken the tension off the belts. The crank mounted drive wheel can lock on the woodruff key, resulting in the correct torque not being applied to the oil pump - hey presto, no oil pressure. Ask me how I know...

The washer has a recess machined into it, like a "top hat" shape.

I'm not a 100% but this is how i think it fits together :-

The v-pulley sits over the stub of the crank this leaves about 4mm at the very end for the washer recess to fit over snug, the the 24mm bolt secures it altogether.

UPDATE :-

Got it back together couple of notes below :-

Crank stub is 28mm dia, BTW the torque setting seems to affect the amount oil pressure,,, as i ran it up with out the pulley on..whilst carrying out diagnosis of the noise (fitted the washer and 24mm bolt), tighten the bolt , not to the 210nm spec and it was a good bar down on cold start up. The washer sits on the face of the pulley as the 4mm clearance is taken up by the thickness of the pulley... i'm thinking that when you tighten the bolt up to 210nm all the pulleys compress the oil seals and o-ring at the oil pump and there might be couple of mm of the crank stud to "pull" under the washer recess. anybody got any final thoughts ?

cheers
