Evenin' all

I posted this on PCGB but those who haven't seen it, here's the result of my first effort. You can see jusy how feeble the standard sidelights really are. They won't be to everyones taste, but with a bit of tweaking , I think it might be an interesting mod, certainly increases your visibility at dusk and doesn't look half bad. May be best suited to black, silver, white and metallics. Any opinions welcome..

i like it - just get led indicators, that'll freshen the whole lot up- i've just put the led ones in mine, looks much more crisper!

thumbs up from me!

I hate the actual Audi ones, look like Dame Edna's glasses but these look good.

I really like them Richard, but you must have to convert the indicators to L.E.D. also? The standard bulbs wouldn't have a chance of being seen next to those side lights. Can you get these L.E.D. strips in amber?

Keep up the good work, Kev. :thumbright:

Evening all,

I must admit I'm not a fan on the Audi LED side lights. I think it's a bit of a fad right now as almost all Audi drivers use their LED side lights during the day - 'Look at me, Look at me' syndrome. (Similar rant I have for people using front fog lights when it's not foggy - I've paid for the option so I'm going to damn well use them and dazzle everyone silly on a wet winters night etc) Apologies, I digress somewhat in a Clarkson style.

That said, I like the idea of what you're trying to achieve. Just a couple of questions though.

Is it legal? As someone has already pointed out, can you still see the indicator bulb when used in conjunction with the LEDS? I'd imagine you'd have to declare the modification to the insurance company so as not to invalidate your policy.

Will it pass the MOT?

I know they do LED's in yellow/amber. What will you do with the redundant part of the side light lenses?

Anyway, like the concept (despite my rant). Will look good with a little more development.

Ben :bounce:

Thanks for all the feedback and comments. I'm not displeased with the result, but I still have some work to do with regard to dispersing the individual LED's with an opaque spacer and distance from the lens surface. A bit like a cross between a row of LED's and a neon strip if that makes sense.

Kev - they have that blue tint which would suit yours a treat.

Image

Good point about MOT - if it's a possible issue, I can always disconnect and revert to standard. If I keep them, then I'll utilise the redundant sidelight by fitting these little cuties..

Image

And here's the difference they make on a lux....

Image

Put the 2 together and the result should be interesting :)

As a result the standard feeble main lamps will look rather yellow and I'm considering replacing them with HID 6000K which should be a better match.

Insurance....hmm..maybe if they pass MOT I'll tell them and check.

Visibility of the indicator....if you look inside the unit, you'll find an unecessary baffle which I cut out and this gives better light across the lens and from the side. I've tried 25 LED cluster bulbs and they are far too directional to be of any real use - plus you need to fit resistor to fool flasher relay. I reality, the indicator is still easily seen.

Are they available in amber?.......

Image

Again the single LED's need diffusion IMO, but the strip(waterproof) is small enough to fit along the top edge of the lens as well. I'd leave the amber/silver bulb, then no flasher problem :D

FROG 944 - First thing to do would be to get some clear front lenses

ben944 -all good points, and I hate fogs on in day with a passion. My aim is to produce something that looks integrated and OEM ish. They are to be seen not to see with - I just hope they don't attract too much of the wrong attention. I do feel a bit self conscious I have to say

Arnt the new Audis the same as Saabs, Volvos etc they come on with the ignition? I read in a truck mag that as from, cant remember when its supposed to start, all cars shall have running lights on in the daytime the same as motorbikes and the forementioned cars as its proved to be succesfull with bikes lowering the accident figures and this was from Brussels so it must be right, right...as there always right, umm. I have a strange feeling it could be 2012 but I read that much crap sat around waiting to unload it could be anytime really.

Yup 2011 although the Germans seem to have it earlier as most BMWs & Audis are doing it now, although they can be switched off.
Linky to the legislation here:-

Stupid in my opinion but hey ho the EU think they know what they are doing!

Woo Hoo......I was told today by an MOT inspector that he'd pass them. :D
