How hard is it to do the belts and tensioners yourself, as in are there any special tools needed etc. Also found my whining problem is the alternator bearings so new one needed so thats ok. When I`m in 3rd gear or below and let off the throttle at any speed it jerks a bit and gives a grinding/moaning type of noise which I thought I had cured by refilling the box/diff oil and addding some treatment but it seems to be back, someone mentioned it could be the torque tube bearings is this a big job?
On the up side I fitted a Cosworth induction filter with a direct feed and it goes well untill 3500 rpm then suddenly it goes again like mad has anyone fitted a kit and got good results I was really suprised the difference it has made.

The belts is a pretty easy job, the only clever bit is getting the tension right. The official tool is verry expensive but there is a device called a "Krickit" I think that some people use. you will need a flat spanner to turn the tensioner with while you tighten it. There are TDC marks on the cam and marks on the balance shaft pulleys to help you out. There is a good guide on clarks Garage too http://clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/eng-06.htm. Its quite common to change the waterpump while you have all the belts off and have a good look at the balance shaft seals for leaks.

From what I hear the torque tube bearings are a huge job (transaxle off and pull out the tube) and if you still have a rubber damped clutch you should change it if it looks perished.

I'm surprised your whine is the alternator, quite often its cuase by the balance belt teansioner being rotated the wrong way to tighten the belt.

I stuck a huge foam cone filter under the nose of the S2 and that perked her up a little bit, but the real improvement was in the sound.

You must have turned her tensioner the wrong way too.
