Post subject:  Replacing S2 front discs

Has anybody done this job themselves? Changing pads is quite easy, but changing the front discs doesn't really look like a DIY job. It looks much more difficult on the S2 than on the earlier 944, for example it seems that the bearings need pressing out and so on.

If it is DIY then I'll do it, I'm quite competent, but if not please let me know before I start to do the job this weekend. I can always give it to my trusted mechanic friend instead.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

It's easier on an S2 than on a Lux. On the early car the disc fits on the back of the hub & you have to strip the hub off the stub & unbolt it!

On an S2 remove road wheel, unbolt calliper & lift off, you may have to remove the pads (you should have new pads with new discs anyway) to get it over the disc. Undo the 2 crosshead screws if they are there! This may need an impact driver, Halfords also do a solid shafted crosshead screwdriver to which you can hit with a hammer to break the rust seal. Lift off disc, may need some gentle tapping from behind, DO NOT belt seven bells out of it you'll damage the bearings. Clean the hub very thoroughly, no rust at all, wipe some copaslip onto the hub, fit disc & wash your mucky finger prints & preservative grease with brake cleaner or petrol. Refit calliper & pads, then road wheel. Drive gently for around 200 miles to bed everything in.

Buy the ones with the painted grey centre they don't corrode and look nasty after 3 months.

I can never remember whether they Zimmerman or Sebring, could turn out to be neither.

Richys will be put me straight. :)

Thank you for the help. It's the Porsche Workshop manual that has you taking the whole hub off and pressing the bearings out. Somebody did (quite rightly) say that some ofthe manuals are wrong. That picture sequence from Rennlist is great - just don't want the wife to catch me looking at it too much... she gets jealous!

I've bought some parts today. Discounts - if you don't ask you don't get. I compared Porscheshop against Eurocarparts. Prices are rounded up to nearest pound and include vat.

Discs - PS £111 + postage, ECP £121 inc postage - although invoice says list price is £155.
Pads - PS £48 + postage, ECP £39 inc postage.
Air filter - PS £21 + postage, ECP £27 inc postage - although invoice says list price is £29.

It was not out of my way today to call at the ECP counter in Trafford Park Manchester, armed with my research notes. I asked if they gave club discount or could match prices, and pointed out that postage is free if I ordered on-line so he can knock that off. They didn't give club discount, and would see what they could do to match. I forgot to tell him that PS also charged postage

Here's what I ended up paying at ECP - Discs £111, Air filter £23. They didn't have any brake pads in. I ordered them for tomorrow morning, but they don't allow you to pay up-front, which is handy as you will see.

As I drove off I saw the GSF place and called in. They had the brakes for £44. I asked if they did club discount "yes, 10%" and didn't even want proof of being a member. I said that was good, but that his pre vat price was the same as the inc vat price at ECP. He said "OK, you can have them for £35". He also threw in some of the anti-squeal grease. I've already got the rear pads for £12 off Ebay.

Think I did pretty good all told.

I'd better not drink too much at the Squash Team Dinner tonight as I've got a big job on tomorrow morning....... fortunately the forecast is for beaming sunshine :D

I think you mean Sebro Sean. Certainly Bert at Berlyn now does Sebro only. Mine are Zimmerman & they have been fine.

But paint them in body colour. Looks fantastic at least for the first 12 months! :) Sebro are the best.
