Post subject:  Bent valves ?
Hi, had my '88 944 2.5 8v MOT'd today (Monday) 2 tyres and it passed with no advs. Great I thought. On the way home the throttle got jammed open, by the time i'd had chance to kill the ignition the damage was done! I now have a lumpy tappety engine, it ran perfectly before it happened. I'm thinking its going to be a bent valve or 2? Oil pressure is still good @ 4bar. All belts are less than 2 years 12000miles. I'm expecting to have to do the head gasket and timing belt and might do the stem seals. Are there any tips on replacing valves and where to get them from. Thanks, Wiggy

How did that happen I wonder :twisted: Tough luck. Have a mess with the linkage/cable & make sure it doesn't happen again. I had a recent head overhaul on my 8v. Total cost including 2 valves, guides & oil seals + a turbo gasket set was £125 from my local engine reconditioner. (Oldham) If any of the tappets are goosed there not so cheap. You will also need new belts. They do just once. Maybe rollers.

I got valves cheaper here as they are VW/MAN parts bin. Cant tell you what there the same as but the reconditioner know. They must be cheap as the gasket set was nearly £40

Did the garage jack the car up? I bet they used a jack near the throttle pedal! It makes the pedal go over centre & does exactly this AMHIK :evil: The floor needs thumping down with a block of wood & a hammer just behind (towards the seat) the throttle pedal.

As for valves probably cheapest from the US, I've been looking at Zim in the US who do cheap bits, EBS & Lindsay are others. If you only need one or two then try someone like SOuthern Rebores or Bert & ECP etc. It may have split the guides as well.

Ah, that might be the case. I had the front tyres replaced before the MOT. Better go and check the floor. Who pays the repair bill if the floor is bent? A can of worms me thinks.

This happens so often it's a no-brainer to always supervise the guys jacking your car up. I'd guess you'll never prove who did it.

Even worse, I've heard of plenty of tyre fitters using the gearbox to jack the rear up. It's a nice big lump of metal to slide the jack under, what could possibly go wrong?

A pound to a pinch of sh1t that the tyre fitters jacked it up using the jacking point on that side or close to it.
It's essential with old cars that you supervise tyre fitters & tell them that they never EVER use the original jacking points. Even on the best cars they'll be weak & someone did a grands worth of damage to Adams car doing this. You should jack on the wishbone mountings (front) or trailing arm mount (rear)

I always jack the 968 up by the jacking points :shock:

Yup the jacking points will be weaker on an old car, I never take the risk even on a shell I'm 110% confident in. No greater effort to jack on a suspension mounting point anyway.

What I tend to do is use something I know to be sound like the crossmember to lift the car then drop it onto axle stands strategically placed right under the suspensione. Unless of course you don't need to be underneath in which case a jack on its own is sufficient.
