Hi everyone, new to the forum. I'm just about to buy a 944 Lux. The guy who's selling it seems very genuine, but he says he is going to have the driveshaft replaced before I pick it up. He says his mechanic told him it needed doing after he noticed a knocking on the weekend. Theoretically this sounds good - one less thing to worry about. However his mechanic said there is a small chance the transmission could have got damaged and he won't know until he has the old driveshaft out.

Are these major things to worry about? Should I walk away? Please help! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just doing drive shaft rebuild at the moment on mine. TBH it is very unlikely to damage the transaxle unless it has been run like this for a long time. I assume he'll test drive it after replacing the driveshaft? Assuming he does then it'll be obvious if any damage has occurred.

When is the knocking sound making itself heard?

A good move WestcoastJonny. Go for it. These cars are very over engineered. Diff is massive. Shouldn't worry too much! Sounds like you have a decent seller.

To test the driveshafts joints, to make SURE he did them.... do this...

On your test drive...drive round a roundabout TWICE.....and listen for knocking...no radio on and window open fully...

Then find a supermarket car park and drive a full circle TWICE in the opposite direction....

Do both ways at a good pace...not slowly....

If you hear ANY knocking at all...don't walk away.....RUN...

Brett Driveshafts on a 944 are not a fortune, if the car is 100% elsewhere then it is a bit of over reaction. Also the above test wouldn't have shown mine up as they only did it when very hot. This is because the one that was dying was adjacent to the transaxle & obviously once the heat soak went into it that made it noisy. CV joints are £70 each, complete drive shafts are £170

Mine was not noisy at all and the CV inboard was totally shot. I _think_ it grumbled a bit, but it's hard to say when you're sat at front listening to everything and the sports back box is drowning everything else out

You missed my point....if he SAID he fixed the driveshafts/joints and did NOT ...he LIED....

I was advising to run because of the lie , not the shafts...

Yes , I see your point, maybe I am just a little too cynical after inspecting cars for a lot of years, my opinion of sellers/traders is probably too clouded by that...

To be honest, most Porsche owners are more honest as they love their cars and want them to go to a good home, but traders are another matter lol
