hi, does anyone in the staffordshire/west midlands area have a belt tensioner gauge they either want to sell or lend?, changed all the belts on my car and just arnt quite sure on the tension, they seem ok but whine, so need a gauge to just be sure :bounce:

Dont use the 90 deg method on the balance belt!! This belt is fairly loose, an overtightened balance belt is likely to be your whine.

Get is proffessionaly checked if not sure.

the worst part of it is i am a profesional, i work at a garge and have done 100s of cambelts, even stupid cars like rover KV6's and alfa romeos, just nobody i work with have ever messed with a 944 before!!!, bad really on my behalf, but hey learn something new every day, so what sort of mileage am i looking at before the whining fades?

Most people seem to use the 90 Deg twist as a setup, in other words can you just manage to twist the longest run through 90 Deg with your fingers? However I have two tensioner gauges here, one is bulky but the other is smaller.

Well, the whine is interesting because I just replaced the belts in mine. The Balance belt is squealing like a stuck pig despite re-adjustment. We have changed the tensioners (smooth and toothed) and refitted it few times to ensure the balance shafts are timed correctly. The car never made this noise before, is it likely that belt whine is just going away?. I don't have a test gauge on this and most of the Indies around here appear to have gone missing of late.. Its the only reason I have not stuck the car through the MOT so far because it never had the whine prior to the cambelt failure. Have confirmed it is balance belt related only. Still don't want to spend a massive amount on tools that I will use once only. BTW Richy_S, fuel rail and hall sender came in very handy, despite the fact it took about a year to get it used!

Normally around the 2k mark, they will still whine you just can't hear it over the rest of the racket. I've got a Crikit here but it only really works on the early cars.

When your engines fresh You can hear the injectors ticking. Sounds a bit belty too. Don't forget to check & adjust the tension around 500 miles or it could jump & scrap the engine.
