I have had my S2 on SORN since the begining of December and have started it up now and again usually to move it out of the way. Now that Spring is here I am getting it ready for the new season. Started it up and I seem to have an awful lot of tappet noise. Question, how long should it take for the hydraulic tappets to pump up? How does the oil get there? lastly, would the 10/40 semi synthetic oil I use have drained back that much it only about a month?
I seem to remember seeing a post from Jim that was all doom and gloom on the subject.

Moi? Never
The S2 like all the 944s has hydraulic tappets & they drain down over time. WHen started it will take a while for them to pump up. There will be oil at the top of the engine but it has to bleed through to fill the tappets. The short answer to your question is it can take quite a few minutes to quieten down. Mine runs 15/50 & if left standing can make the most noise you'd imagine but as it warms through & sorts itself out it is fine.
You could spin it over with the ignition unplugged to get some oil moving but I doubt you'd get enough oil pressure up to properly fill the tappets.

We called Porsche in the 90s with the same problem, The service Manager at Evans Halshaw told us it would take 40 minutes. Sure enough 40 minutes later the fan kicked in and the tappets went quiet. There must be a few bought and sold in them minutes thinking the motors gone bad!

Mine used to be a little bit noisy, but since using Mobil Super semi syn 10/40 I haven't noticed it.

Hi
As other people said not to worry, had mine stood for 5 months as was restoring body . When finally got it running my heart sank as thought done the cam, waited for about 5mins and the noise got quieter until dissappeared. I recently px'd the S2 and got 911 3.2 carrera.
I miss the S2 . Wish i could have kept them both

Thanks for the advice guys. I can now get on with changing the belts knowing the top end wont need a re-build. Must get it ready to come off SORN at the end of this month.
