sunroof drain tubes

Post subject:  sunroof drain tubes
Where do these tubes finish? I am going to try to clean all four of them out but need to know where to expect the wire to exit them to know that they are clear. I tried some nylon strimmer wire the other day, but it only went in about two feet into each tube, so I guess electrical wire might be the next try.

Can’t say that I’m certain about this, but I think they exit as a rubber hose under the side sills, where they run backwards along the car for a few inches.

I’m sure someone will be along in a little while who can say for sure!

IIRC The fronts drain at the front of the sill and the rears at the top of the wheel arch.

The fronts might just drain in to the sill its self

The fronts drain into the under bonnet area just forward of the windscreen on the ledge on the N/S where the fuse box is & mirror image on the O/S. This area has slots in the inner wings which drain down from there. The rears go down the pillar & exit just behind the rear wheel, with the O/S "Teeing" in with the petrol filler drain.
Use some stiffish cable but don't go mad, you can push the drain off the metal tube in the sunroof!

Before you go sticking wires down things......

Take the sunroof out and open the bonnet. Using a jug or bottle pour some water down the front drain holes. You should see the water appear in the compartment Jim mentioned. Then stick your fingers under the slots at the side of the wing and clean them out - they usually get full of leaves and gunge. Then pour water through the slots and it should drain out onto the floor under the bottom of the wings.

Pour some water down the rear drain holes. You should see the water appear on the floor under the rear wings.

when you pour water down the drain holes make sure you catch it in some sort of vessel, you can then see if any has leaked out through broken joints or pipes

This is getting a bit scientific :mrgreen: I normally find that when I drive down the road & brake gently & Becky gets half a pint of dirty water in her lap it normally indicates the drains are blocked :roll:
They seem to silt up & I use some car flexible wiring shoved down it clears them out, easiest with the sun roof out. Wiping the channel out before you do it with a damp cloth is a good idea as well. Bear in mind my car isn't garaged.
This always restores matrimonial harmony :lol:

I used the tube that is inside a spray bottle to clean my drain holes and a whole heep of brown coloured silt was cleared out after I'd removed the leaves.

well, thanks so far for your suggestions. The front tubes function fine; they do terminate in metal fittings in the scuttle area, and the nearside one has a clear plastic tube which extends therefrom to allow the water to drip out down the front of the inner wing. The rear tubes do not seem to let water out, but I could not locate where they terminate. Is it perchance in the lower rear wing areas wherein the rubber drain plugs for the hatchback catches reside? I haven't yet poked anything stiffer than strimmer line down those rear drains for fear of dislodging or piercing the tubes.

Nope drains from hatch latches are different. Yes the sunroof ones end in the compartment either side of the lagguage area. Right down just behind the rear wheels.

Job sorted, tubes were all clear, which makes me woder how water appeared on the inside of the upper part of a windscreen pillar during torrential rain. I have since applied some liquid silicone in behind the rubber, ie around top corner of windscreen glass, so it may have cured the problem anyway.Alternatively it may be the sunroof seals, they are 23 years old ,and when the car was only 3 years old I did hear wind noise from that area when cruising at 130mph on the Autobahn.
