The gear knob does not just unscrew you have to lift the leather gaiter and remove a circlip at the lower end of the knob it will then lift off, I found the best way to get access was to remove the centre console or at least to unscrew it from the arm rest and stereo unit so it could be lifted to one side for access underneath (be careful not to damage the switches and connections. The gear knob is slotted to match the gear linkage which is flat not threaded. |

Hiya, You can do this without having to remove the centre console. The October 2006 copy of 911 and Porsche World has a 2 page spread on fitting a new gear knob and gaiter on a 944 on pages 112 and 113. If you can wait until Thursday when I'm back at work, I'll scan the relevant pages and try to post them on the forum. Failing that, I could always send you a photocopy or a pdf to your e-mail if it helps. It is relatively involved by the looks of it though. Regards, Ben ![]() |

if it's a pre-oval dash you can just pull up on the plastic part that the gaiter is attached to, it's just clipped on. My gear nob isn't even clipped on so any castoffs will be appreciated ![]() |

When I said remove the centre console I only meant the section surrounding the gear lever, however what I failed to mention was when I did mine I replaced the linkage so taking out the console made it easier to replace the linkage ball/cup. If you want a good guide have a look on Clarkes garage section on thi website home page under resources, Garage Shop Manual, T for Transmission you will find a detailed description of how to remove the gearknob and any other parts you might want to replace. |
