I have just driven home, and as I turned into our close I noticed my full beams were on. They were not selected to be on. I have had a look and the lights work as follows - Select sidelights on - just the sidelights are on as expected. Select headlights on - sidelights are on, offside headlight is on, nearside headlight is very dim. Select mainbeam on - sidelights are on, offside headlight goes to high beam, nearside headlight is very dim, both driving lights are on. Select mainbeam off - sidelights are on, offside headlight goes to low beam, nearside headlight is very dim, both driving lights are on (yes - on). The only way to turn them off is to turn the lights off completely. Then it's the same routine again. NB - Yesterday I had to clean the contacts on the nearside indicator bulb, it was being intermittent, so I scrubbed the contact on the bulb, put it back in and it works fine. Any ideas anybody? |

Just sounds like a bad connection or a bad earth connection. I had a car where the back lights did a similar thing with the indicators earthing through the brake lights. |

There is an earth point near the nearside headlamp, there maybe one on the otherside as well. I'd give that a strip & clean. Also check all the relays are clean & seated properly. |

Thank you. Two useful clues. The earth connection is fine, so I looked for a bad wiring connection. I looked at the wiring on the back of the headlight and noticed that it had been repaired in the past (this is a one previous owner car and I haven't done it). I disconnected the plug on the back of the nearside driving light and the fault went away. Everything worked as it should, except, of course, the nearside headlight didn't come on at all. I undid the tape round the wiring and found the brown lead had severed. I cut the plug off, trimmed back the wires and tinned them. Then I did the same with the wires on the loom side, matched them and soldered them together. Insulated with the ubiquitous black tape, made sure the wires were routed correctly for flexing reasons, and that the plug was mounted in it's bracket - and everything works fine. Total time to fix was less than one hour, and the cost was nothing. The fact that I had done something to the indicator was just coincidental. |

i think there is a loom repair piece for this, the loom flexes with the movement of the lamp and the wires break |
