Post subject: | Engine oil warning light problem on 944 s2 |
Hi, The engine oil warning light wont go out. When I brought the car the engine oil warning lamp sometimes stayed on after I started the engine, I would turn off the engine, start again and the lamp would dissapear. I know this is not ideal as the engine should be switched off for more than two minutes before restarting as according to the owners manual. Now no matter what the warning lamp stays on all the time. The car is up to the max level with oil so no issue there. Can someone please advise.... is it a good move to first replace the oil level sending unit which I believe is screwed into the block directly under the oil filter?. I must soon have the swedish MOT and the car will not pass with this blasted lamp illuminated. Any thoughts and ideas much appreciated. Thanx Warren |

If you are sure the oil level is correct and it is a problem with the sender unit either disconnect it and or short it out to remove the light or remove the dash lamp while it is MOT'd then fix it afterwards. |

It sounds like the sender to me as well, it is though worth checking to see if the connections are OK & on tight. Be careful about bypassing the warning light because it will be while you've done this that a real issue will happen ![]() |

Its probably the sender, but don't risk running it. If you can get hold of a workshop oil pressure gauge fit that and see what the pressure is |

Dont chance running it...! I am doing this from memory but If you look under the filter there will be a 2 pole sender. There are 2 wires on it a Blue/White which is your guage and a Blue/Red which is your warning light. If you short each one in turn to ground the light should go off and the guage should read 0. This will tell you if the sender is at fault. I had a similar issue on my '44 and got a single pole oil warning light switch off a Golf (I think) at a local motor factors. I wired the light only Blue/Red. I had to wait a while until the proper sender came in. Always assume that you have no oil pressure - As suggested earlier get a mechanical guage to prove that it is ok. ![]() |

Is the guage reading reading high? It could be something simple, that the wires on the sender are on the wrong way round, try this first and save yourself alot of grief. |
