I`ve decided to keep my standard alloys but want to space out the rears 20mm does anyone know how far you can go with out changing the studs for length??

I'd have thought any more than a few mill will be needing longer studs, the nuts are blind so the studs aren't that long to start with!

Think it's only around 6 or 7mm

20mm spacers have their own separate studs.

Yes, youll have to invest in a set of hubcentric spacers with new studs. Id suggest that you opt for 30-odd mm; because theyll always keep their value. Theres a good vendor on eBay; based in Canada.

I`ve seen a few different types but the bolt on ones seem to be the ones to go with. After a few weeks driving it needs a bit of a seeing too first though as of today the passenger window has stopped working again, the fuse had gone for the central locking and since that was replaced the volt meter is reading only 12 volts although it starts ok after the lights etc have been on, the thrust bearing is sometimes noisey, a belt has decided to start giving a turbo whine and finally the diff or box is about to give up as it grinds when you let off the power, deaccelerating so alls good really but too be honest the previous owner wasnt the best on servicing so its to be expected oh and the handbrake has become crap sure thats it but its an excuse to spend more time with it at the weekend tinkering.

The gearbox needs looking at ASAP it sounds like pinion bearing in the diff. It maybe low on oil so I'd check it sooner rather than later. The voltmeter bit could be an earth. The belts do whine a bit generally, but if it has suddenly started it could be an idler startin to die.

Porsche do make a 28mm spacer (originally off a 911 Turbo), but youll need longer studs to suit too...

Cheers guys, I`ll check the gearbox the weekend its definately the diff, the belts have made the whining noise since I`ve had it not overly loud but noticable. That pic looks ace and is the look I`m after so i`ll be on ebay over the weekend for a set.

let me know how you get on! i'm tempted myself as with such lovely flared arches its a shame the wheels sit so far in under the bodywork.

having said that i've read bad things regarding spacers, increased strain on wheel bearings being the main one. I think in the long run getting some cup or fuchs with 8-8.5j rear rims might look and work better. cost a crapload more too mind you.

Your rear bearings will become service items with spacers. There not cheap either. OK for a weekend toy. But for a daily drive it's a consideration.

They all whine a bit to be honest, for some reason new ones whine even worse! The diff sounds bad news as a diff rebuild won't be cheap, I'm looking at stripping the new replacement box to check the LSD plates & general diff quality. It doesn't look too bad looking at the manual.

Its mostly in 3rd upwards, as you let off the accelerator it gives off a dry scrapping noise but the faster your going when you let off the louder the noise. I had a van once that used to do it and that was the diff. It dosnt look too bad a job to change if needs be. I`m going to drain the oil out, if theres any in it, and add a oil treatment then some new oil and see what happens. I think its the pas belt thats the noisey one so i`ll check that too. Its going to have too be done a bit at a time as work has really slowed down and the hours with it so money is getting tighter so depending on what it is will depend on the time scale to replace or repair.
