Post subject:  clunky rear axle
okay, so while I was rolling around underneath the back end of my 944 this afternoon scraping the crud off the fuel tank to find the leak I thought I'd check the other stuff I could reach.

The rear axles...are they supposed to move sideways if you grab them and wiggle them towards and away from the wheels?

If so (and I hope they are, cos mine move a good centimetre or so), should there be any knocking from them?
The nearside one is almost silent in its movement, but the offside one knocks quite loud at each end of its travel.

Can anyone help me?? (and I was joking in my other post about welding the fuel tank... :blackeye: )

Also, what else should I check when I go back under to remove the fuel tank?

Yup they can move in & out of each joint but there should be no play up/down & side to side, any significant movement is an MOT fail.
The knocking is the circlip hitting the joint.
If you're dropping the box to get the tank out then it's worth checking the gearbox mount & stripping,cleaning & regreasing each of the CV joints.
Any Serck Marston radiator dealer can refurbish your tank as can quite a few radiator specialists. I've used frosts tank system in the past.

Well you may remember I bought my Skoda as a cat D insurance write off, had it jigged straight and then repaired it.
When it was on the jig the mechanic type person pointed out that the nearside gearbox mount had cracked at the middle fixing, taking a small lug off the top of the gearbox with it. He advised that as there were two other bolts (one in front and one behind) that it would probably be fine.
So I took him at his word. :roll:
He probably didn't appreciate my style of driving, and over the last 6 months the front bolt has stripped its thread, and the rear bolt sheared off!
This resulted in my engine dropping by about 2" on the nearside... D'Oh!

So it's currently at the gearbox specialist having a replacement gearbox fitted - should get it back today or tomorrow... :bounce:
