Post subject:  Aerial mast - won't go down all the way

Hi all.

As the title suggest, when I turn off the radio the aerial starts it's journey into the car and then stops, leaving about 1/4 sticking out. I have lubed up the aerial and tried to push it gently down as it is doing it's thing when radio is turned off....but don't want to snap it.....and it still stops with 1/4 left to go. So not hidden.

What do you think hive mind?

Thanks in advance.

M

Looks like an aftermarket aerial, should be able to remove it from inside the wheel arch?

Maybe a replacement is in order, or maybe you can fix it once removed?

Ah ha...

I removed it and gave it a service, put it back in and still the same. So, got a Beru generic one https://www.ebay.fr/itm/383780876150 which arrived today! Pretty cheap. Haven't fitted yet but is looks very close to what I have....something to do over xmas. This time I won't remove the wheel but maybe turn it to the right for better access....

Fitted it yesterday.

Only took 10 mins....front wheel at full lock and good access. Pulls in far more stations than before. Lets hope the chrome lasts better than the old one.

A nice little job ticked off.........

ex- radio tech & car radio installer/repairer here.
DO not use grease or oil on it, it will pick up all manner of crud & seize it solid. Every couple of weeks wipe the mast with a rag/paper towel with some WD40 on it. That'll take the crud off & not attract more. Most decent aerials have drains from the bottom of the motor, make sure its clear.
Good quality aerials used to have mast repair kits available for them.
Jaguar Xj's used to use two electric aerials, which were a serious PITA!
