Hi all, This is my first post here, but I have been looking at the forum for years and it is a great source of advice - I have my fingers crossed someone can help with my problem!! I have a 1991 944 S2, right hand drive. I'm lucky in that it is still quite original. The car was off the road for a number of years and brought back to life by a local classic car garage (actually the only one!). While they will work on any classic, their passion is Porsche, so they are quite experienced. However, we are all stumped by this problem. When the car was back on the road, everything was working except for one thing, the speedometer was dead - it didn't measure speed (mph) or distance, no movement from the needle at all The garage reckoned it was the speed reference sensor, they called it the sender and goes on the gearbox (sorry if I am calling it the wrong thing, but hopefully you know what I mean). So they replaced that. When I got the car back from them the speedo was now recording speed, but the mileometer was still not working. For that we assume it is a gear in the speedo itself. But that is not the biggest puzzle. The speedo now works, but instead of measuring in miles per hour (it's a UK car, so has to be miles), it now records in km/h. What I mean is that if the speedo says I am doing 80 mph, I am actually doing 80 km/h (based on GPS). The same holds for all the speeds, it seems to have converted to km/h. I know there is only one sensor that can be replaced (ie doesn't matter if miles or km) and the guys in the garage did not need to go near the speedo itself so there was no change in gear ratios or anything like that. So we are at a loss as to what is going on. I assume there is only one type of speed sensor (ie there isn't a miles and a Km one, there is only one). But we are stumped! Has anyone ever come across anything like this before? Thanks Brian |

Years of being involved with 944 nope its a new one on me. I don't have access to the parts manuals anymore so cannot see how the different calibrations are achieved. It is a hall effect/magnetic sensor off a gear in the gearbox. So two ways of changing calibration. Alter that gear or a different speedo head? |
