Checked the oil level in the 944 and there is a hint of moisture (water) on the inside of the filler cap and the faintest hint of emulsion at the top of the filler neck. Coolant is clear of oil and no obvious running problems but I suspect the head gasket is on its way out. The old girl now has 166k on the clock (39k with me over last 17 months) and there's nothing in the service records to suggest the head had ever been off Anything else I should consider? TIA Paul |

Most probably just condensation because of the cold weather. I wouldn't worry about it too much just yet if there is no sign of oil in the water or vice versa. My Fabia has a fairly thick layer of yellow mayonaise around the filler cap which is purely due to condensation in the breather system. A decent run to get rid of all the moisture should cure it. |

Yes, don't worry unduly unless you have other symptoms as well. Either or both of my cars normally have a thick layer of mayo inside the filler cap at this time of year. Especially so if they only do town driving or runs shorter than 20-30 minutes so the whole system doesn't get a chance to burn off the moisture |

cold weather, short trips, unless you are losing water then just keep an eye on it. maybe change the oil and clean out the filler |

Mine has always done this, even worse at this time of the year even if it does do long runs. I think it's because the oil tower is quite tall & sits away from the warm block. |

Must admit I considered the cold weather thing but I checked the oil after a 60 mile run so the engine was nice and warm. Also the car covers 100 miles a day so very few short journeys. Anyway I'll bow to the collective thoughts and forget about it unless any problems arise Thanks all Paul

ok then - get a compression test - or possibly a leakdown test... or - this is simpler, get an MOT station to stick the CO sniffer in the water tank - that will smell any hydro'cs in the water system. Water and engines don't mix
