Afternoon all.

Was down looking at my engine today, which should be making it's way back into the car next week, and noticed this broken thing? Can't say I've noticed it being there or being broken before!

Possibly the remains of a heat shield? Let me know what you think, and if you have a brand new one available for less than a tenner!!

Cheers

Stuart

Hi Stuart , you are correct . It’s a broken heat shield for oil level sensor plug / wiring and I have had one break as yours is, before now . Bought replacement from porsche but a bit more than a tenner I’m afraid .

Ok, it looks like it is a heat shield that doubles as as protecting the oil level sensor and also a chunk of sump gasket.

Part number: 944 101 033 04

There is an earlier version, pre oil level sensor, that protects the sump gasket section only. I'm guessing it will be a good idea to have this in place?

Having looked about online and seeing D911 selling it for £69 + vat (£2 off though  ), I'm guessing £50/£60 from OPC with my standard 5-10% discount. I will call tomorrow morning.

£59 + vat from OPC. As I am well known John @ Glasgow OPC has knocked that down to £47.12 + vat which is about 20% discount! Chuffed with that. It will be with me on Wednesday morning.

He did say sorry it's not a big discount!

Let the engine re-install commence!!

Had to do a double take when I looked at the photo, my heat shield had failed in the exact same place!
Given the environment that the heat shield lives in, I put several coats of VHT paint on mine try and help with longevity - might not make much difference but it can’t hurt.

Yes it seems a very common failure point after looking into it. I've no idea how long mines has been like that (it looks like it has sheared quite some time ago tbh) but pre-rebuild I had a livable with, but annoying sump sweat. Given that it is a fairly large and expensive job to replace the sump gasket with the engine in the car, (vs around £50-£60 to replace the shield) I would be making sure this shield is in place in order to protect that area of the gasket and also the oil level sensor and wiring.

With my engine out the car and fully re-built it was a complete no-brainer for me to attend to this issue. Was luck more than anything I noticed it at the garage the other day but now glad I did!

I did the sump gasket with the engine in  and yes, it was a bugger of a job, mainly to keep the gasket in place and not pinch it whilst doing the bolts up. One of those times when you need three hands
