Post subject:  Master Cylinder rebuild kits?

I have always wondered if my 944S' master cylinder needs replacing, it doesn't leak and seems to perform well enough but after 36 years on the car I expect it could do with renewing. The dilemma is that a new one is in the region of £400+ so I was looking for something a bit more reasonable ie a rebuild kit, does anyone know if this is something that is available for the 944, I'm struggling to find anything?

Unfortunately I can't tell if mine is a Girling or ATE master cylinder, the part numbers that seem to be available for my S are;

Girling
944.355.011.10

ATE
944.355.011.01

The only clue I have for which master cylinder I have is the number 13460 stamped on the end of the MC body which when searching comes up with nothing?

You might have to buy a couple of rebuild kits by diameter and then strip yours and replace the seals with the closest of of the bits you have gathered
Autofren make a lot of kits

I have eventually sorted this out. I hunted for kits and the Spanish site you linked to made it hard to work out what I needed.

I had previously been looking at a new master cylinder from ECP but with it only being £80 and looked slightly different, I didn't buy it but as I was now stuck I decided to pull the trigger on it with the intention that if it was different I could return it? I got it yesterday and it turned out exactly the same even though it said Mercedes on the box, I have bled the system again and I can't believe the difference, the reason I wanted to change it was that it was old and pedal was soft and went down further than you would want, the difference now is like night and day and shows up just how soft the pedal was before, the pedal is now hard with very little travel, I'm wondering if the fluid was passing by the seals. A very worth while change, the part number for anyone interested is 132 22 0138

That’s really interesting, did the box have any other numbers on it other than the big euros sticker

Because it maybe that the internals will fix other 944/968 master cylinders, as they all have the same size bore

It just said Mercedes and not even a particular Merc model.

I thought it may help to post some pictures.

Old v New, everything is the same apart from minor casting differences. I moved the extension part over to the new one, I'm not sure what it does or why the brake pipe isn't longer to fit straight into the MC?

Old markings, even with it removed I cannot work out if this is ATE or Girling, there are no distinguishing marks. I am tempted to rebuild it still if I can find a kit.

And fitted with original fluid tank

Oh that needs a new tank now, looks like the poor relation

I agree, one for the next brake fluid flush

Hi, a very interesting thread indeed! The big extension piece on the side of the master cylinder is some kind of brake bias valve that limits the pressure to the rear circuit (I think..), it wasn't fitted to many models, but my 88 S has one too.

I have tried to find the master cylinder you bought from ECP and tried the part number you gave, but nothing came up. Can you provide the actual ECP number directly from the delivery note/invoice/order - I would be very grateful. Thanks.

This is the link to it https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/pagid-br ... -132220138 but as Waylander says there is no availability, looks like I may have got the last one? It is made by Pagid so may be worth checking their site out also?

Yes, I saw the number and input it exactly as given - it didn't work - because of the spaces.

Thanks Infra for the link, I will see what alternative manufacturers can offer for that Pagid part, or get it elsewhere.

I have looked through the Pagid Brakebook and the hydraulic catalogue, but without knowing what Mercedes it’s for, almost impossible

And I won’t tell you what it cost me but it was less than a miller & carter dinner
