Afternoon all ,
I am currently in the throes of a top end rebuild on my 1990 S2 Cab. Fitting new Hydraulic Tappets , Camchain and Pads , belts etc as well as replacing the rear oil seal on the lower balance shaft ( What a pain that is !! )
During this , the plug connecting the Camshaft Hall sensor to the rest of the loom ( Behind the distributor ) has turned to dust and fallen apart. I've sourced a replacement plug ( thanks to Waylanders 's post some years ago ) but my problem is I am unsure of the orientation of the connections. On the Hall Sensor side there are three wires , Black , Green and red. On the loom side there are ( and the colours are somewhat faded and aged ) they look to be Black , Brown and White . Clearly the middle wires go together ( ie Green to Brown ) , but does the Black from the Hall Sender go to the black on the loom , or to the white. I've looked on the WSM wiring diagram , but it doesn't appear to help in this matter.
Is anyone able to help , perhaps by checking their physical connections?

The car loom will have two wires and a braided shield , you need to confirm the earth lead is the colour you think it is

The other two can work either way round, it’s a Hall effect sensor

Yes the car loom black cable is a braided shieid. However none of the Hall sensor cables show a continuity to earth on the casing of the hall sensor. Should they?

Ok so mine was in a bit of a mess, age heat and oil had taken its toll on the sensor, it had become detached from the mounting bracket and destroyed by the timing plate on the back of the cam pully


this is the plate and the new sensor, I'm a cheapskate so instead of buying a new one, I fitted a HKZ101 hall sensor back on to the old plate, the plate with the remains of the old sensor, and the new one

now I can't remember if the black was connected to ground, if it was your sensor could be missing completely like mine.......

Sorry Waylander , Got tasked by SWMBO on something apparantly more urgent !!
Yes the pics are helpful , but I guess the proof of the pudding is when I try and start her up , after finshing the belts etc . Assuming it starts OK , what if any symptoms of a fubarred sensor are there ( bearing in mind I dont have access to an oscilloscope )? Good call on the HKZ101 replacement.

The engine will run without one, but if it’s not working you will be down on power and consume more fuel, the ecu will retard the ignition timing if it has no signal, and it changes the injectors from sequential to all at once,

I don’t know if you can connect a durametric to the S2 it will tell you if it’s not working

I noticed a big difference after sorting the wiring on mine - as Waylander says - the engine ran when the wiring was bad, but once fixed it was much smoother, better emisssions, less fuel and felt more powerful.

The difefrence is noticable.

Ok , so done a bit more playing it.
Resistance between signal and ground is about 800 Ohms , which appears to be in the right ball park.Just trying to build a test rig to simulate it running. Presumably supply voltage is 12v .
Has anyone found a supplier of HKZ101 that dont want £20 carriage or cannot deliver until late May? Preferably UK based.

It does not have a power supply, it generates a tiny pulse when the poles are passed by the trigger

Having re read Waylanders post ( back in 2014/15 ) I originally missed the bit about VW/ Audi Hall sensors , but have now ordered one off ebay ( for backplate mods ) for £11.
Although not entirely convinced that my original one is fubarred , for the sake of £11 can't afford not too!!.
Just need to finish putting the rest of the front of the engine back together. I'll keep you informed.
