Hello.
Just bought my second 944, an S2 convertible, did it the proper way, untested and unseen blind bid on eBay! Lol.

Turned up the other night on the back of a truck in the dark and rain.
So I'm still none the wiser about what I've really bought, but hey how bad can it be? Hahaha

Looks nice from outside, bodywork, brakes and suspension is outstanding, everything seems to work, but interior is very tired.
Plus the is a strange whistle from the exhaust.
Previous owner thinks it's normal, I don't. Any ideas?

RE: bodywork - important areas to check on a 944 -

1. Bottom rear of front arches (under side repeater) - behind the arch liner and on the outside.
2. Outer and inner sill - you can see in to part of the sill by removing the plastic vent when the door is open and poking a torch inside.
3. Rear trailing arm mounts in front of rear wheel
4. Rear wheel arch front and back (you can check the condition from the inside as well via the side storage in the boot.

In my experience those are the main rust areas although some members may have other experience.

Mechanicals are not that complex and most parts are available still however bodywork is the one thing you need to be sure of (unless you are a panel beater or bodywork guy).

Hopefully it will stop raining soon so you can take it for a spin with the top down!

No idea what the exhaust sound could be - you sure it is coming from the back? - can you record it and upload to youtube?

Thanks for the welcome, yeah I've had a very rust 944 before, this one has had the sills sorted with genuine panels.

Had abit better look at it this afternoon. I was mistaken, the whistle is coming from the front of the engine. Really quite loud, It has had the cambelt, tensioners and waterpump replaced in the last 500miles.
Do you think it will quieten down?

Like the idea of fitting a roll bar and engine bay brace. Any recommendations?

Yes pretty easy if you have done it before

On the longest straight run you need to be able to twist the belt through 180 degrees with little effort, it will seem ridiculously loose but that’s how it should be

When does the whistle occur?

If it is when the throttle is open then I don't know, but if it is when the throttle is shut and the engine is on overun it could be a leaking inlet maifold or gasket. When I was at school, a long time ago, I used to work part time at the local garage. The proprietor drove a Humber Hawk and it suddenly started whistling on overun and eventually it was traced to a damaged inlet manifold gasket. I suppose it could be a dodgy gasket for either throttle position.

No never even looked at the front end of a Porsche engine. Fairly handy DIY mechanicing, changed my classic goldwing belts last month..... And it worked! Lol.
Any good clear YouTube videos anyone can recommend?

As to location of whistle/whine, I will attempt to have a closer listen. Maybe try to listen through a long screwdriver.
But the whistle is constant, but increases with the revs.
Hopefully get it on some driveway ramps this Monday.

I found Edredas' method the best for installing a belt, although you only need to adjust the tension on yours if it is what is whistling.

Fitted a number plate, jet-washed engine bay though.
