Hi, my cv joint on my 1986 N/A 944 has started to rumble. I have a spare driveshaft with cv joints that I bought on eBay a while ago to renovate. Looking closely at the cv joint on the shaft it is part no. 951.332.030.00 and the shaft has 25 splines.
I think this is off either a turbo 944 or looking in the Internet maybe a Boxter. (The shaft looks in very good condition and is plastic covered and I seem to remember that cv joint number was also referenced to a Boxter)
1. I think if it’s from a turbo 944 it will fit without any problems. Although could there be an issue only fitting it to one side?
2. If it’s from a Boxter would the shaft and cv joints be a direct fit on a 944?? I haven’t taken mine off yet but it looks to be the same dimensions (I know nothing about Boxters).
Thanks for any help.
Brett

The 944 N/A and Turbo part numbers are different, I've no idea if you can use the Turbo part on an N/A car...

The Turbo CV joint is used on the Boxster (986?) inner joint only.

Thank you. White knight. The CV joints are the same on both ends of the half shaft so I’m guessing this isn’t off a Boxter. Tho I never thought to check the other CV joint at the other end. I’m glad you mentioned it. Maybe then off a turbo.
Hopefully removing the half shaft off mine this later today so maybe able to do a better comparison.
Hopefully the shaft and attached CV joints (which were supposed to be ok) will fit without issues?
Brett

I wouldn't think it is a problem as long as the sizes are the same -

Bit more information in the threads below - basically the turbo shafts / CVs are stronger built, if you replace the entire shaft and both CV joints on an axle to the uprated Turbo item it should fit fine. Problem would occur if you tried to mix and match as the N/A has 33 splines instead of the 25 splines of the Turbo (turbo also has larger ball bearings).

Also the shaft length changed in 1986/87 I believe after the ABS hubs / aluminium trailing arms were added.

You can buy CV at just campers for a lot less than Porsche

And they are made by the same folk who build them for putting in a Porsche box

GKN, SKF, and so on, there are only a few companies world wide that make these things

As another point, Porsche reckon the bolts are single use. I have reused them but always Loctite them. I also know of a few that have broken as well. Personally I try to use new every time.

I seem to remember Ed China saying not to swap shaft sides as they get used to the torque in one direction.

This is actually why it’s good practice to swap the shafts if you have both off the car, to equalise wear on the CV joints.

Hi, ref the bolts from Kay’s. I can only find high tensile 12.9 with alan heads? And Is that supposed to be m6’s @ 60mm length.
I removed my shaft with the 2 cv joints. That and the spare I bought appear to the same dimensions . The rubber boots are different but the cv diameters and overall shaft lengths are the same. My spare has the same cv joint both ends so I guess it’s from a turbo and not a Boxter.

Just to clarify, the bottom shaft and cv joints in the picture are off my 1986 N/A 944.

Sorry I’m all a bit screwed up recovering from CV19

12.9 is correct and I could have looked at PET2 for sizes, just so tired could not be bothered

Sorry to hear that Waylander. Do whatever’s necessary to get better. I think I speak for many when I say your contributions to this forum (and YouTube!) are valued and I for one look forward to meeting you when things are back on track. Take it easy.

Well I replaced the old half shaft with the turbo shaft with its 25 splines and turbo CV joints at both ends, without any particular issues. Test drove it all seems ok. (The funny noise, which I referred to in my original posting as a rumble, my wife says was more like a tyre going flat. Maybe she was right and I had a flat spot on the Firestone tyres I have on the car Anyways at the minute the noise has gone)
Thanks everyone for the inputs, made me feel reassured that’s it was going to work out and it appears to have.
