What options are there to cleaning out the fuel line from and including the tank via the filter to the engine? Is there a filter right at the fuel tank outlet? Is it possible to insert a filter at the fuel tank outlet - to stop the muck making a blockage?

There is already a filter in the tank outlet. It can be removed and cleaned best to replace the rubber gasket and drain tank first oc.

Not sure how much muck you will have as it’s a plastic tank on an S2, there is a gauze filter on the tank outlet and you need to be careful when removing it as it’s quite easy to ruin the tank if it’s rusted in

Have you changed the actual fuel filter as that might be 20 years old

If you've got muck in the lines then the injectors will need cleaning and the little basket filters changeing. You can get the little filters, O-rings and a tool on ebay. It's best to get them ultra sonically cleaned and flow tested, I have my own kit and have done all the injectors on the 944 and 993. You may have corrosion in the fuel lines (like I have) now that's a fun job.

Thank you for your replies. They will help me when I discuss the situation with my garage. Fortunately it has cleared itself at present, but it has happened twice, once last week and once about 3 years ago.

Has the inline fuel filter ever been changed? It is a service item but gets "forgotten" by a lot. I've seen some in a real state.
Be careful changing it as it is easy to damage the pipework. Another option is the pump starting to break up & fail. Possible if you've had water in the tank.

twice in three years, you either dont use the car much or i would be looking elsewhere for issues,

when they are blocked they tend to stay blocked

Guys, thanks for your observations. I have been thinking about “looking elsewhere” as was suggested. So a chat with the garage and it transpires the distributor cap and rotor arm are both well worn so new parts are on order. I asked that the filter in the engine bay is still checked.

No fuel filter in the engine bay, it’s at the rear above the offside drive shaft
