Post subject:  Chain Tensioner Guides!
A friend of mine just bought an Italian LHD S2 & although did the usual major service, did not replace the above(as did I). The engine was running smooth as can be, until he went to start up after a spirited drive with friends; the car would not start.

Turns out the chain tensioner cracked/disintegrated etc doing extensive damage to the head....to the tune of €6000 in parts alone :shock:

Apparently these are best replaced over time as well :roll:

Needless to say, both guides will be on order. Already have Top Cover rubber seal; any other suggestions?

Now the Top Cover will be removed, perfect time to have it powder coated. Would like to go for a kind of factory look with a silver & black Porsche lettering. Any suggestions on colour?

A trashed 16V chain can write the engine off as not only does it damage the head irreparably, but can scrap the bores with bent valves. It is not just the tensioners but the chain needs changing as well. Typically at 100-120K miles

Also need to inspect the teeth on the cams as well as if the chain has been loose for some time it can wear them out meaning new cams required...

When I was about to buy a 968 from him, an indy Porsche dealer showed me what he could buy 2 new cams for. It was about £300.

Yup last Porsche price I saw was £750 a Cam! There was a company in the USA who could resprocket the cams.

Are there any tell tale signs to show if chain needs replacement?

If the chain is allowed to wear significantly then the sprocket teeth on the cams "hook" as they wear. Unfortunately they are made as part of the cam so are not a replaceable part. The teeth should be symmetrical. If they aren't then it could get expensive.

That’s web camshafts

I have instructions and diagram and parts to have an engineering shop machine the cams to weld new sprockets on, somewhere

Just looked in PET, cams are £729.00 each inc vat for an S2, 968 are £947.00 each inc vat

Chain is £32,

The slide rail repair kit is 944.105.949.00 £94 inc vat
