Has anyone got any advice as to how to remove the spring mechanism from the luggage blind?

I'm pretty sure the spring mechanism is broken - it's certainly impossible to wind any tension into the spring - and I want to get it out to see what the problem is, and whether it's fixable. I've got the blind out of the metal cover, but the plastic end cap on the spring side (right) is very tightly fixed. You can see I've tried to pull it out with pliers, but it's not moving at all and I'm starting to damage the plastic so am reluctant to pursue that further at the moment as I think I'll need that bit.

I've obviously no idea what's inside the tube and will eventually resort to trying to knock it out from the other end with long drift if there's no other option.

Or alternatively, does anyone know anyone who fixes these things?? The fabric itself is in perfectly acceptable condition, it's the the spring that's the issue.
