Nice job on the cross member! Despite being a pain to get off, it looks like the Dinitrol has done it's job in protecting it from the ravages of time & crap on the roads! Got the dreaded white fur on mine where it bolts to the chassis but other than that, it is in remarkably good condition.
Power steering looks like it is cleaning up nicely too. Are you planning the same for the transaxle?

Cheers H.

The Trans axle... hmm. Although plastered in Dinitrol, it's quite clean under there. I did sort the gearbox - pics of that soon.
I think i'm going to leave that. I intend to clean up or replace the front steering knuckles and replace front shocks and springs. Given that lot is accessible with engine in or out, I want to crack on and i'm gagging to get the thing back on the road.
The car has been getting less and less use to the point that I SORNed it some 6 months ago after failing the MOT on emissions only; Dodgy connection to the Auxiliary air valve.
Knowing that I had an engine, ECU, harness and gearbox, I became reluctant to do anything to it until I sorted the fundamentals as any fix would simply be temporary.

Not sure what i'm going to with all the cleaned up Alu. I'm reluctant to paint it as (i presume) it will peel over time. I've never painted Alu. I have copious quantities of clear lacquer (2K).

Any suggestions welcome.

oh that will remove all the surface contamination, so it will be back to bright shiny, what you do after that is your choice

i would go for some Bilt Hamber https://www.bilthamber.com/corrosion-pr ... s/dynax-uc

Its clear, so you can even use it on your lower body paint work over winter,

I personally love the B H range of goodies, the Autowheel is brilliant, wax is cheap and very good, clay bars dont need expensive lube just water...

I see.

I use the Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 rust treatment. It's excellent.
I found their 'wet look' wax a little OTT and tend to use Fusso soft99 wax sealant topped up with a colour wax on top instead.
Interesting about the clay bars.

the cleaner polish for old paintwork is a brilliant spider web filler and polish all in one, like Autoglym resin polish

Another endorsement for BH stuff from me. I use their Hydrate 80, Autowheel, Korrosol, Autowash and Surfex HD products. Got some clay bars too but not had the need to use them yet. It was Waylander who put me on to them to be fair and I'm glad he did!

Day 9.

Bit of a fiddly day today but in retrospect, got a helluva lot done.

Painted the central part of the steering rack and pipework.
Painted the U bolt of the above.
Received 2 steering rod ends, (1 M10 bolt missing! ) plus 2 bellows for the SR and the clutch slave.
Won't finish the steering rack until I get some O rings.
Took off the clutch reservoir and enameled the mounting U clip. Cleaned out the gunk in the reservoir. Made up a new braided pipe from reservoir to master cylinder.
Removed steering column, cleaned it up, treated with BH Hy80, enameled*.
Removed r/h heat shield. Those funny metal tabs with a hole in the middle crumbled on me. I thought I might split some Spire nuts to replace them.
Bit soft that thing. But the wire wheel cleaned it up well.
Painted the clutch master cylinder - after inspection (it was fine).

*That will be fun to re-install; lost the location marks I made in the process.

Day 10

I had an 'easy' day today which involved doing some schoolwork with my daughter.
I've turned the corner - no more filthy jobs, on the clean run so to speak.

Now, I wrestled with the bellows on the steering rack. If anyone plans to replace these, I recommend do the following:

I spent 1 hour in vain trying to get the small end on to the rubber bung. The pair was £9.95 from 9 Apart - they're solid, good construction.

After a cup pf tea, 23 biscuits and some head scratching, I came up with a plan.

I placed the bung on to a 3/8th's drive extension and pushed it up to the neck of the extension.
Then slid the bellows up to the bung, then put the extension in the vice.

Image

Image

I pulled the bellow taught against the bung and used an old ('blunt') screwdriver to lever it on to the bung. Bingo, done in less than a minute.

Image

Then slid the bellow with bung, on to the steering rod.
The other end is relatively easy to put on to the groove on the Aluminium steering box.

Most of the rest of the day was spent cleaning up the engine bay for the final time. Damn tedious, removed a lot of things to get access.

First, I used clean petrol and a soft paint brush to dissolve grease, grime and remnants of Dinitrol. 3 passes.
Then I used detergent, hot water and a brush - all the while keeping volumes of liquid to a minimum. I did this again and again.
Then I used T cut. Surprising how much more grime came off at this stage.
After that I used a touch up brush on the worst scratches.
Then I used Sonax colour wax once the touch up was dry.

I'm chuffed at the outcome. It's not concourse and not really worthy of pics but it's cleaner and presentable. The heat shield is a big improvement. Complete Spire nuts went on to the self tapping threaded studs without hitches using a spanner.
I'll picture the heat shield tomorrow.

Day off tomorrow, bar a couple of silly jobs. Engine has still not been delivered from storage but I haven't received the clutch alignment tool or a few other bits yet including high tensile bolts for the cross member and wishbones, so I can't do much anyway.
Ordered proper SS hose clips. I will have to revisit fuel lines and some pipes in the engine bay once they arrive.

Seems like you have had a good day. I bet if you had taken a before and after photo you would have seen a big difference.

Nice tip on the steering rack bellows. :thumbright:

It's incredible how much clutter one collects over the years.

Why did I say that?!

Day 11.

Removed wishbones. I gave them screwy looks for a while, so I took them off. No matter how much I squinted, they never looked good. My word. Pics tomorrow.
Bushes are fine, which is good.

Painted (enameled):
Front anti roll bar and all clamps, hangers associated with them.
All the bits for the steering rack that needed painting, are painted.

The weather gods are looking down on me. The courtyard was at least 30 deg at ground level. The BH hy80 dries in no time and the enamel comes up glossy without much effort.

Pics tomorrow (yeah , I know, I said that yesterday but i'm cream crackered).
I had to chop the bolt holding the swivel joint on to the steering knuckle.
The other came out like a breeze. Sod's law.

No sign of engine and box yet.
Must harass transport bloke. I give him a lot of work and money so he ought to be a bit more compliant. I can always send the work elsewhere :D
