Post subject: | Non starting 944 |
Hi New to the forum Bought a 1988 944S recently. In trying to change the leaking small hose from water pump to heater rail, I disturbed the 3 prong plug just behind the cam cover (right side) of engine. The male prongs are numbered 1,2,3 but not the female plug. I reconnected the plug (possibly the wrong way round) and started the engine. Started first turn, ran for a couple of minutes then misfired and stopped. Now will not fire. Tried reversing said plug to no avail. Previously the car ran ok, albeit very rich. What have I done. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks PC |

That'll be the plug for the cam position sensor. There are notches on the plugs you can use to check the orientation. Assuming you haven't disturbed the sensor itself which is bolted on the back of the cam gear housing I can only imagine it might be a broken wire. If you have a multimeter you can check for continuity at the DME pins, if not check the pins haven't backed out of the plugs and see if moving the wires around a little helps. |

You might have caused the DME relay to fail, or it just failed coincidentally. Worth swapping it out. If it was running rich your Fuel pressure regulator might be knackered as well. |

Cam sensor won't stop it from running, Just retards the ignition timing It could be the plug for the crank pulse sensor, that would stop it running |

Thanks again for good advice DME relay it was, started as soon as it was replaced. Still not figured cam sensor plug connection but car seems to run fine with the plug disconnected and taped up out of the way? In fact does not smell nearly as rich. According to history a new fuel pressure regulator was fitted last year (& certainly looks shiny new) Am I ok running with with the cam sensor disconnected as I think it blew the DME relay? Peter |

Cam sensor tells the ECU where the engine is in a four stroke 4 cylinder cycle Without it connected the ignition timing is retarded and the injectors all fire at the same time instead of sequential But it will not do any damage at all to the engine |

As Waylander has already said - it shouldnt stop it running. The wiring for this sensor was fritzed on my S2 and it still ran. When I fixed it the fuel consumption was miles better though! |

Eureka Found a wiring diagram last night Connected today & car appears to be idling nicely, revs ok as well So here hoping its solved Once I get time I'll do a fuel pressure test regarding the rich running Wife thinks I'm building her new kitchen ![]() Thanks again for all the advice Good Xmas & New Year to all |
