Post subject: | Intro |
Hello...after some lurking and the odd question time for a proper intro. Just purchased an early 944 (the one in my other post) after a few years of wanting one. I hope to have this as an ongoing project (something to tinker with in the garage) and hopefully some meets and trackdays. The car is pretty basic with no sunroof or power steering. I live near High Wycombe so well located for the Thames Valley meet. The interior is pretty shot on the car but I plan to remove much of it. First jobs.... replace n/s window motor replace visor clips clean up/replace n/s tail glass pin oil/filters remove decals replace gearstick restitch steering wheel Anyhow...any help will be appreciated when I have some inevitable questions...hope to meeting up at next TV meet. Remove decals? This an ex track car??? Weres the pic's??? Hope your delighted with it! But get it over the pit & check out the brake lines, fuel lines & all the suspention bushes & replace the timing belt unless it looks brand new! Cheaper than a new engine. |

no it's not an ex track car...a future one hopefully. I plan to get the belts done in Feb when my mechanic is available, they were last changed in 04 so need to be done asap. I'll ask him to take a look at the brake and fuel lines as well. not sure on the decals yet make keep them... ![]() |

Hi and welcome. These cars are always started with a list of jobs. Mine's still to be finished. Shame you've bought the slow colour ![]() |

For a track car buy 2 924 manual window regulators and replace the broken motor and the good one. The 924 parts will bolt straight in and save a little bit of weight as well as taking out something unnecessary. I quite like the Martini-esque decal from the picture. |

for the manual winders...I guess I'd need to keep the door cards off or get 924 ones? Also, what oil make/grade would people recommend? Is the sump washer a standard size? |

Nope, if you feel around your door cards you'll find that there is a hole through the fibreboard that is just covered with the vinyl/cloth trim, so you just need to carefully cut through the trim to let the splined shaft poke through and then fit the handle and the plastic washer that sits behind it. On the later doors at least there are two options for exact location of the regulator. Make sure you get the one that allows the winder handle to clear the corner of the dash with the door closed before you cut the door card to suit. It may not be an issue with an early car as the dash is a different shape (that happens to be the same as the 924). |

Oil I tend to run 15/50 which I buy in bulk, but most run 10/40. If you're running it hard then run a Semi Synth like Shell Helix or similar, Halfords is good it's made by Esso. Otherwise a good mineral changed 3-6K is OK. TBH never changed a sump washer but if you buy oil filters from an OPC then they'll chuck one in. TIPEC members get 10% on parts or better & our OPC will deliver for free which makes 'em cheaper than most of the factors. They are very sensitive to plugs & ignition so check & replace where necessary. Air filters tend to get forgotten as well. |

Taken it out for the drive to work today..let it warm up to half way on the temp gauge before putting my foot down.pulls nicely so very happy. Idiot question I know...jacked the car up last night for a quick look underneath...can I use the round bits just behind the front wheel arches to place my axel stands? Also is the oil sump relatively far back...I can see a plug of some description facing out towards the offside of what I think is the oil sump (one half has a ribbed appearance). There is a protective tray further forward...I was expecting to have to remove this? |

HOWEVER I'd never advise any one to jack on the jacking points on an old car. I use the rear wishbone/castor mount at the front where the two bolts are visible on the chassis rail. AT the rear I use the torsion tube where it meets the rear trailing arm. As for the oil, yes it's a 16mm AF hex thats on the lowest ribbed part of the sump. It depends which undertray you have, mine has a two piece one & I have to remove the main part under the engine. Earlier cars have a short undertray & I think you can get away with it. |

thanks for the advice Jim. Oil change all done today...had a worry yesterday with some dripping oil after a poke around discovered the oil filter was one turn from coming off. Amazing what some fresh oil and a tight filter does for the pressure reading!! |
