Post subject: | Instrument Cluster |
So I am taking the instrument cluster out this weekend because several warning lights don't come on. I want to replace any bulbs that may be gone. Questions (as usual) - Are all the bulbs the same? 12v 2w, glass pushin? - Do I need to replace holders? -Any other bulb types on the cluster, I read somewhere there are 3 larger bulbs? All standard from Halfords etc? LED conversion is down the light, for now just want it all working. Thank you |

From memory they are mostly the same type of bulb with an odd exception. The bulbs come already fixed onto the holders and are twist fit. I bought a spare clock pod from ebay soon after I bought my car and it has been invaluable for spare bulbs and parts. You can't buy the bulbs from Halfords. They are available from Porsche but I've never had any need to find an alternative source, which I'm sure must exist. Stuart |

As mentioned, I seem to recall two (max 3) types of bulb for the cluster. They are available on the internet but I found OPC (Official Porsche Centre) prices to be reasonable especially with the TIPEC discount. I found it a bit of a faff taking the cluster out so wasn't prepared to use bulbs of unknown quality which may only last a short time and have to risk re-doing the job multiple times but that may just be me. Whilst you're in there it might be worth checking the silver metallisation which is on the underside of the cluster. It tends to deteriorate over time which reduces the reflected light and makes the backlight very weak in low light conditions. If you put some metallic silver tape over the metallisation it significantly improves the effectiveness of the backlight and brings it back to how its meant to be. All these little jobs will make a huge difference to the car so keep going. Matt |

If I have to leave the cluster out till I have the correct parts, no worries. I have about 8 jobs on the go!!! |
