Post subject:  Oil cooler hose failure

Hi Folks,

So I was on the way to get the car a fresh MOT today and the oil cooler hose decided to blow off at the oil filter housing. Luckily I was just bimbling out of a village and first sign was a cloud of smoke and then the 0 oil pressure reading on the dash. I stopped the engine which sounded fine and coasted luckily down the hill into a driveway for recovery.

The hose and fittings were new and purchased from Motamec so I'm a bit concerned how they would fail in this manner. The engine bay and underneath of the car is a bit of a mess as its now coated in oild that should be in the sump...

Looking around I quickly found the culprit - see below, I understood that these hose and fittings were fine for oil coolers and saw the same setup in a thread on rennlist.

As you can understand I'm pretty scared to use these hoses now I've had a failure (luckily I've still got the original Porsche hoses if I decide to refit them).

These were the original pictures of the hose assembly...

I've emailed the shop I bought the fittings from as I'm not sure they should fail like this...

I now have a right mess to clean up :x

Go buy 5 litres of brake cleaner and a couple of cheap spray bottles, you will need more than one as the tigger pump seals don’t last long

But it’s great for cleaning up all that oil

Thanks Waylander - I made a start yesterday evening and got the "bat wing" and engine undertray removed, been using some surfex HD and got the top of the engine bay clean already. It doesn't look that bad to be honest... I think most of it ended up in a long trail down the road...

Going to remove the other bits today including the RH wheel and ARB so I can clean all that up, then going to remove the hoses and either refit the original Porsche ones or get some ear type hose clips to clamp on the joints of the aftermarket hoses.

Once I've sorted out the hoses and refilled the oil I will degrease the underneath and get the pressure washer on the exhaust and chassis, then might be an idea to find a place that does steam cleaning to get it spotless.

The undertray and bat wing had a fair amount of oil on them which I managed to mop up with plenty of paper towels, they are going to get a clean along with the ARB and wheel from the pressure washer later.

One step forwards, two steps back

i would take that all to Pirtek and get it Crimped up,

ear clips and jubilee clips wont hold 5 bar for long

Way ahead of you - I kept the original setup in a box so will be putting that back on, lesson learned on not to buy fancy AN fittings, most of the websites selling them say the push-fit fittings are fine for oil AND fuel lines without clips... wonder how many other people have had problems because of this...

But at what temp and pressure?

Well I can't really think of any application for AN fitting oil hoses on a car where the pressure wouldn't be something standard around 0-6 bar. The hose itself has a rating of 150 PSI on the side and the website says -40C up to +93C

The hose appeared to fail after the engine oil had reached temperature and the thermostat had opened, the other pipe that goes to the front of the oil filter looks fine and hasn't loosened at all.

Guess I should have done my homework better :| - I'd assumed as the hose was rated for oil that it would be able to withstand the standard temperatures that car oil systems operate at... obviously not.
