So it's about time I changed the belts etc on my turbo. Full kits don't always specify manufacturers, and I suspect some vendors are over charging for the convenience. The 2 Gates belts are less than £50 on ebay, but I get conflicting part numbers for the 4 INA rollers/tensioners?

Hi Pauly,

I just recently did this on my turbo and you are best searching with the Porsche Part numbers as most of the cheaper ebay sellers have the correct Porsche part number against the item.

You can also check the INA catalogue (but I think it has a few errors) -

https://porschedocs.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/pdf/INA_belt_drive_components_pc.pdf

I bought my tensioners from these folks for a pretty good price -

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORSCHE-944-2-5-Timing-Belt-Tensioner-87-to-90-INA-94410563106-Quality-New/232562738370?epid=942233707&hash=item3625d1c4c2:g:o2sAAOSwridaDAFZ:rk:2:pf:1

I still have the INA boxes from when I did mine so I've taken the part numbers off the box and entered them below :)

Timing Belt Idler Roller - 94410524104 - INA 532004310
Timing Belt Tensioner Roller - 94410563106 - INA 531072410 (there are two INA part numbers for this but it was identical to the one I removed from my car)
Balance Belt Idler Roller - 94410227706 - INA 532042110
Balance Belt Tensioning Roller - 94410202507 - INA 531005710

Cheers

Thanks guys, spot on. This reminded me I'd kept the INA boxes from Promax when I changed the parts last time. Only 14k miles since, but 7.5 years. I have inspected the belts every couple of years, but anyone reading this, do as I do at your own risk.

Show him this picture of the cracks and fraying on mine after less than half that time/18,300 miles, hopefully he'll reconsider - they looked alright when I checked them in-situ!

What brand are those belts?

The timing belt was a Porsche-branded Dayco belt (both logos printed on the belt), but I can't read what's left of any markings on the balance shaft belt. The garage who changed it said at the time that they would only fit Porsche belts, I assume the balance shaft belt was a Porsche/Dayco belt as well.

Mine were last done by Promax back in 2011 (car has been off the road though for almost 5 years)

When I nearly bought a 968 from a Porsche Indy 11 or 12 years ago I asked him about the cams, he showed me how much he could buy them for, and I think they were about £350. Back on topic I ordered the 4 INA rollers/tensioners and 2 Gates belts today. The ebay £133 is less than the Promax kit 8 years ago.

I just checked PET, the cams are now £947.00 each, so plus your head set,all the other bits and bobs for a full head refresh

Set of Valve springs 16 at £29.00 Guides and seats cut, I think 4K is a bit on the conservative side

Close to the point for sticking on a 2.7 head, some low comp pistons, and converting it to turbocharged :) .

I have heard of 944 16V & 968 cambelt failure totaling the engine. Valves damaging bores when they clash & also the head breaks irreparably. 8V normally damage the valve guides as well as the valves.
