Post subject:  944 Turbo - Engine Oil Flush

Hi Folks,

I'm currently getting my 944 Turbo back together and need to do a flush of the existing engine oil as its been standing for about 4 years and smells a little like thinners...

Any recommendations on a cheap oil to run for a hundred or so miles as a flush before I stick some Mobil 1 back in?

I've been looking at getting a cheap 5w-30 or 5w-40 as they can be had for around £15-£20 per 5L -

Triple QX SynPlus SAE 5W40 Fully Synthetic 5L A3 B3 B4 5 Litre (from carparts4less) - £16.99

Cheers

as far as I understand from a fella that works for Euro's / CP4L that all the Triple QX oil is Shell, so cheap but not rubbish

I was advised by a specialist once not to use an additive flush on a turbo, but you don't seem to be alluding to this. I ran a boggo 20/50 mineral for 1000 miles after my engine rebuild, but you haven't done that either!

So I'm not much use it would seem!

Thanks guys :)

I just want to get the smelly oil out before I put some Mobil 1 back in, last change it had Royal Purple I think but it looks a very peculiar colour and smells disgusting. I'm guessing its probably got a little bit of fuel and water in it after standing for so long.

Will go for the cheap synthetic stuff from Euro / CP4L as it doesn't really matter I guess if it is only going to be in for a short period.

I had considered putting a quality semi-synth or mineral oil in but don't want to mix them even though I know its not an issue, my OCD doesn't like the idea lol

How come you ran a mineral oil after your rebuild?

I ran a mineral oil as the engine would not be working hard during the run in, and the plan was just to get things moving after the rebuild before hitting 1k miles and putting good oil in again. Also the guy who helped with my rebuild, who is a remarkably good mechanic, advised to do so. I've now done 35k trouble free miles since the rebuild so clearly it didn't do any harm!

Hmmm you got me thinking now :D

Perhaps a good semi-synthetic 10W40 will be good to run for a few hundred miles...

Seems like these are the recommended ones for the Turbo -

Texaco Havoline Extra
Valvoline SynPower
Motul 4100 TurboLight
Motul 6100 Synergy+
Shell Helix HX7
Mobil Super 2000 X1
Fuchs Titan Syn MC

I'm sure I've heard good things about most of those listed so maybe I should try one of those and then switch to the Mobil 1 afterwards...

UPDATE: I went for some Shell Helix HX7 10W40 which was £15.99 for 5L from Eurocarparts on ebay! so £31.98 for 10L - not bad!
