My friend's 1991 S2 Cabrio has a defective ABS ECU as it is showing a fault. After a lot of checking, I tried my ECU(1989 S2) & the fault cleared.

Can the ECU be repaired?

The other thing that springs to mind is how do you know yours is 100%, when was the last time you tested your abs?

Yours might be completely busted, and his might be showing a fault in the ABS system

Find some wet grass or something slippery to test on

I'm sure they can be, but any 928, 968, late 944 one should be fine, buy a used one

And if the second one is completely broken then no fault at all My ABS pump was a ball of rust and would not have run if you put a 1000 volts through it, never showed any error at all You have to be sure of the bits you are swapping in, or it’s all a waste of time

Interesting. We did do multiple tests before plugging in my ECU. The fact of the matter is, with his ECU, after ignition, diagnostic triggered an ABS fault in the dash. When replaced with my ECU, the ABS failure light did not come on & when his refitted, ABS light on again. If mine was also a faulty ECU, wouldn't this show an ABS failure; wouldn't this suggest mine functioning & his defective!?

you could try it the other way round to see if you get the fault with his ECU, I would take a guess that a full repair to the ECU might not give you much change out of £300, they are now NLA even exchange with Porsche, last time I looked they were very close to £2K, test your ecu in your car by standing on the brakes on a wet road or wet grass and see if you get the pulse through the brake pedal, do you hear your ABS pump fire up as you move off for the first time, it should kick in at 5kmh. lots of things to check, just be sure of the parts you are using to test is all I'm really saying, or else you could well be wasting your time

I've had a seized pump no ABS light fault. Pump even primed but was dead as a dodo when needed. Now have a working pump and regularly give it a whirl in the wet to keep it working. They can be a pig to remove and refit. As said, try it in action with your ECU to ensure the system is working. It's not the best ABS in the world but far better than having none. Pedal will pulse and you should be able to steer when it activates.

Last time I drove my car, which is a while now, I did feel the ABS pulse affect in the pedal. Also, had driven the car all the way from North wales to Malta via Stuttgart. I felt the ABS came in a little early but that could be down to corroded discs etc as the brakes do need a refresh due to lack of use. Better than none: agreed.
