Not having had one of these guys before, I've noticed a bit of what I can only describe as "slack" in my transmission. When coming off the throttle in gear there is a noticeable "clunk" as the wheel speed overtakes the transmission speed, and vice versa when accelerating again. Happens in every gear, so not the gearbox I don't think. Is this normal?? ![]() |

There is quite a lot of play in the 944 trans, if you take the boot carpet out & drive with the seats down it'll sound like the gearbox is about to fall out! However there is a failure mode in the clutch whereby the hub breaks up & creates a clonk noise. First shot is to check the gearbox oil. They must NOT be run with a low level it will knacker the box, preferably change the oil for fresh stuff & preferably Swepco from Berlyn as it'll imrove the shift & cut the racket. Whist under there check all the driveshaft bolts with a torque wrench as they can come loose. If any are loose, either locktite them & replace & tighten, or better replace with new 'uns. |

I would check the driveshaft UJ's first. Rich |

I suspect the clutch is failing in time -honoured fashion. |

Sounds like the clutch to me as well as mine was doing something similar until the clutch was replaced. |

Thanks for the suggestions folks - I'll try the obvious ones first (the UJs, and bolts) - how much is a clutch likely to cost me? John |

Well as you asked (hope your sat down) I believe the Sachs kit is around £400, but then you may be looking at £300- £400 for fitting. Kit can be had from the usual sources (Berlyn, GSF etc) Mine was replaced at the same time as I had a 48k service plus new belts and a lot of other bits (see viewtopic.php?f=25&t=2249) so I cant give a clear price as to labour costs but John Mitchell quotes £795 plus vat fitted. |
