Post subject: | 944 Turbo engine swap |
After trying for most of the summer to sell my 944 without success, I think I need to try a different strategy. The problem is that everyone is looking for a completely original car, and mine is certainly not that. It is a 1992 944 S2, but completely converted to turbo spec. It has a 250hp engine, turbo ECU, exhaust and dash, together with various Lindsay racing bits. It's a very quick car but it certainly is not original. Unfortunately that all affects the sale price. The highest offer I got was £5500, which I declined. The only solution seems to be to convert it back to original spec, which would mean selling the turbo engine and components, and trying to buy original 944S2 parts. I would also have to spend several weeks taking it apart and rebuilding it - none of which I am looking forward to. Perhaps I should have accepted the offer? What do you guys think? Is there no value in a customised 944? |

sorry - posted this in the wrong place. Can a mod move this to the 944 discussion area? |

Considering the amount of effort and expenditure required, you would probably be better of taking the £5500. |

Yes unfortunately it's only worth what someone is willing to pay, and is unfortunately no different from an RS escort to an escort with all the RS bits on it, which is not an RS on the log book. Your car is worth more than £5.5k in parts. But you will never get the right money for it an it's an S2 with a turbo heart. I would say the car is worth closer to £10k. Problem is it will never attract a collector. However if you sit tight you may get an enthusiast that realises he can get essentially a £20k car for much less, who won't view the log book/conversion as an issue. Sucks really, I bet your car is a great drive! Stuart |

Stuart 10 years ago I'd have agreed with you. Now all sorts of tat is being called an RS, with prices to match. Around 15 years ago my Mrs was given her Grandmothers mk11 2 door Escort pop with 30k from new on it. One owner from new and rust free. All I'd need today is the VIN plate from a scrapped RS and the shell would be worth thousands. |

Aye that's true sadly enough. |

Another idea - turn it into a road legal track-day toy and advertise it as such. Much less effort and expensive on your part and you'll get much closer to the £10k mark for it as well, especially if you get the 'look n feel' just right. |

If the bodywork and interior are in good condition the car is worth £8-9k all day long. Getting what it's worth is another matter obviously. The likes of DVB would undoubtedly break it for way more than £5.5k. Are there pictures of the car online anywhere? |

I looked at your advert. The wheels, paint issue, mileage and engine conversion will give the price a kicking. I'm guessing it hasn't got a turbo gearbox/LSD? And S2's didn't come with turbo brakes either. |

If it was an original 944 turbo, it would be at least 4 grand more than I'm asking. I guess it might be better to break it, but I think that would be such a shame. |
