Hi I’ve changed my old rubber puck type clutch for one of the new Sachs spring centre type on my 1990 944 S2. Having put everything back together I now find that the engine won't turn over. When I turn the key there is a clicking noise from the newly refurbished starter. It sounds like the starter drive gear is not engaging with the clutch/flywheel ring gear. This seemed to be confirmed by what looks like the leading point of the starter motor drive gears being ground off slightly. I have bench checked the starter motor and it appears to work properly. I have charged up the battery and even attached my booster pack but the same clicking noise is evident when I try to start the car. I can turn the engine over by hand with no problem. Does anyone have any idea what’s wrong? Many thanks Neil |

you left an earth strap off the engine? it takes about 200 amps to crank the engine, have you got all the wires the right way round |

Waylander wrote: you left an earth strap off the engine? Good spot Waylander. I've only not reconnected the main earth strap from the bulkhead on the right hand side to the bellhousing. Doh! So a little bit of groping around tomorrow and I should be able to find the connection point. The only excuse I can offer is that having changed the clutch I noticed that the torque tube bearings were a bit noisy so I've changed them as well and it's been some time since I started this whole job.... Thanks Neil |

I have seen throttle and clutch cables ignite into flames when they provided the main earth |
