I understand this is not very common tool but hoping for any help from you guys. I finaly found Bosch KTS 301 diagnostic tool, got latest 8.1 Porsche module and 12pin cable for my 88 944S 16valve. DME was found and recognised but instead of diagnostics it's giving me strange error I'm not able to identify (see attached video). Any person here with experience with this equipement? Or anyone willing to see me and connect his car so we can check? I'm in Kettering, Northamptonshire.

You are in luck!

You live not far from John Speake in Cambridge, who is probably the world's expert on the Bosch tool (no exaggeration)

Contact him via his website and I'm pretty sure he'll be able to help and/or fix whatever problem is with the Hammer.

I'm afraid I'm not :( John was the very first person to see my video and this was something new even for him. Unfortunately there's no online resources regarding 944S diagnostic with Bosch, best option would be to find someone with same car near me to try or swap ECU as my could be bad.

Is the 944S supported by the hammer, have you checked in the workshop manual?

I can see it reads the motronic unit, I would tempted to power the car off by disconnecting the battery for a while then test it again once powered back on

Also do you have a problem with the car or are you finding faults that don’t need fixing

Diagnostic on these cars was rudimentary at best in 1988, and didn’t really get much better till 1996 when OBDII was a standard

If John Speake can’t advise then no one can!

But Waylander makes a good point. The Hammer is convenient for testing actuators and reporting faults (I use John Speake’s ‘reverse engineered’ version on my 928), but it doesn’t do anything you can’t do with workshop manual and testing individual components by accessing connectors etc directly. I think the biggest advantage of Bosch tool (for late 928) is it will automate the PSD flush procedure, but even that can be done manually if more laborious.

In short it’s fast and convenient, but won’t tell you anything you can’t achieve through individual component tests (other than report knock events). It’s a nice to have not a must have!

According to available sources Hammer can be used with cars from 88 onwards including 944S, workshop manual mention 9268 (previous version) but as far I know it was printed before they manufactured Hammer (9288). I live with my car for 18 months and I'm fed up of testing and replacing individual parts as it changed nothing so far.

It depends on what your issue is,

the hammer will not read any values from the AFM as its not an intelligent device, it might read a few sensors and stuff but on the whole the car is fairly dumb,

the 968 is not a whole bunch better and 8 years up the road from where you are with software,

the hammer was more for the very complex 928.

what issues are you suffering with?
