Post subject: | S2 Brake Judder |
Gents, hi On a recent trip to North Wales (circa 750 miles round trip), I became aware, or perhaps more aware, of a slight judder /vibration through the steering wheel when (gently) applying the brakes. Not something I had noticed before, but may have been there before? No noises or sound , just a vibration through the steering wheel when brakes applied. Pads, disc and callipers were all new circa 14 months and 2500 miles ago, and the car happily went through the MOT in April with no adversaries. I'll have to look at things/ have it looked at over the next couple of months (the car is drivable for the summer currently and no problems otherwise) but it's now in my mind so I'm "looking" for it when applying the brakes. ![]() Any advice as to what to check /look over or likely culprits to check would be very much appreciated. cheers |

Could be several things: 1. Check your wheel nuts are all correctly tight, the correct torque is in the owners manual. 2. If the hubs weren't scrapped / cleaned before new disks put on this could cause a judder from the disk not seating properly 3. Check caliper bolts are tight 4. Worst case is the balljoints on the control arms have given up |

or the disks could have warped a bit |

Pad pick up is a possibility a few judicial hard uses would clear that. Some say the discs don't warp but they do. At a track day last year one of the rear hand brake shoe springs came loose and the disc warmed up a lot, the judder was terrible. Plate lift is common, felt by uneven braking and sticking pads. Other possiblities are worn suspension bushes especially the front wishbone and castor block. |

Thanks guys. I had a rear handbrake spring come off a few weeks ago (mainly caused a squeak at the near side rear wheel when driving) and that was fixed quickly. I'll be using the car for a few months before I try and track this down (unless it becomes a lot worse). I expect it's something that could be caused be a lot of issues (or a combination of issues) and finding which one (or ones) maybe a bit of an investigation. I'll let you know how I get on later this year if/when I get it resolved. Thanks for your help |

Most likely cause is the discs. |

Hi Mine started doing this. Did at any stage when left for a while did the pads stick to the disks? |

Don't know if the pads stuck to the discs over winter?. Pads, discs and callipers were all replaced/new when the car came out of storage 15 months ago. I'll post an update later this year if I resolve what is causing the issue cheers |

Apologies for late getting back to this but had a slight accident/bump in the car last October, the had the car off the road for a few months over winter so didn't get this looked at properly until just recently. The car went to a local garage for some undersealing and other work and had them check out the vibration through the steering when applying the brakes. They cleaned up some paint under where the discs had been fitted, but that did not solve the problem, so in the end I had to stump up for some new front discs, which has solved it. Slightly worrying that what were new discs only 2500 or so miles ago (along with new callipers, pads and braided hoses on the front,) should have warped/come out of true in less than 2 years.?? However the new front discs have solved the problem, so it's all good now. ![]() |

Just out of curiosity what make were they, as I’m having a similar issue 2500 miles after all four discs and pads, |

I was told that the ones that were taken off were from Paggid and only 2500 miles old when I started to notice the judder/oscillation when braking/slowing gently at speed. The ones I had fitted now were Zimmerman (German made aftermarket ones) supplied by Frazerpart. |

Same here, Pagid Time for a rethink |

I only noticed the problem o the front because of steering wheel oscillation when braking, not noticed any issues at the back …(yet?) where discs were replaced at the same time some 2500k miles ago. Got my fingers crossed that the rear ones don't start to get warped as well since they were probably also Paggid fitted at the same time as the fronts that warped?? |

I've just had some Zimmerman's delivered. Previous discs warped after not many miles, were then skimmed and warped again. Sadly can't remember what brand they were but I know they weren't Zim's, so i went for those this time |

There has been chat before iirc that ECP pagid stuff is not actually very good. How this can happen I'm not sure. I have ECP pagid discs on mine and have used them for years and haven't had issues with them. They are very cheap however when purchased from CP4L using one of their many discount codes, but as I say no issues for me so far. Stuart |
