Dear Fellow TIPEC members. I was at Simply Porsche today and saw this for sale : https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds ... 88/8667479 I am looking for a nice 944 and this is immaculate with a superb service history. The seller is an absolute gentleman and the car has had significant work undertaken over the last few months. In short it is a peach. But..... Always but ! I am in a slight dilemma as 944 prices seem, ahem, a bit random at present. I would appreciate any thoughts on pricing from fellow members on the car I am interested in and also your best 'crystal ball gazing' on future values I also have one specific question. I have never seen this pinstripe interior before. It is absolutely perfect with the outside side bolster in leatherette but is it a 944 design? Thanks everyone Regards S |

The S2 looks a good buy. I've just purchased after a long time looking and that is a bit expensive (in my opinion) for that model of 944. Good luck. |

Looks expensive to me, I’d personally want an S2 for that money, and TBH for not much more you could get a Turbo. Prices are a bit odd at the moment; there was an s2 for sale at £18k the other day, not sure if it sold. I have a Cayman but always wanted a 944, I found a Grey S2 with 197k miles in the clock that I picked up for £4300. The paperwork for this car was unbelievable and the owner had even documented all previous owners, the mileage they did and what they spent on the car! I took it to a specialist the other week and have a few jobs to do to it do bring it up to scratch with the bulk of that being suspension work. Body work has a few scabs but I don’t want it to be immaculate as I want it to show it’s age...people are shocked when I take them for a test drive at how quick it feels. There’s plenty out there and do not rush to buy. I’d be paying, roughly; £9k for an S2 £4 - £8k for a Lux £15k + for a Turbo Gets some test drives in before you buy to see what model you want, usual places are eBay, PH, AT and there’s normally a few in Classic Porsche Magasine in the Clasiffieds too. My rules were; View paperwork before inspecting car (falling in love with a car can make you miss stuff in the paperwork) Ignore mileage Water pump, chain, belts and slippers MUST have been replaced Must be OEM everywhere (says he who has just put Fuchs replicas on!) Little or no rust Expect some bodywork issues - these cars are 30yo Don’t buy a minter as I wanted something to fettle with Gav. |

Hi I have a very similar car to the one you are looking at on PH. Mine has 85k miles but is in similar condition and I've spent a lot of time and money refurbing many of the mechanicals. I had a recent valuation by the team at TIPEC and was advised to insure for £10k on an agreed value. I suspect the lower mileage on the PH car makes it worth a little more but £14k seems quite expensive. However, insurance value and achieving that price on the open market are not necessarily the same thing. Gmund Cars has a very similar car for sale with similar mileage for just shy of £15k but clearly you then have the consumer protection of buying from a dealer. By the way, the seat material is original fit and mine has the same (I've not seen many others). The mixture of leatherette and cloth bolsters on the PH car looks a bit strange though. I believe you could specify all one or the other for the bolsters rather than a mixture. As has been said, the LUX is often overlooked by those wanting the extra power of the 3 litre S2 and I suspect that has a negative effect on values. Gav's advice is not what people would follow. People are obsessed about mileage. But he is right! To put it into perspective I owned an S2 at 120k and a Turbo at 170k. I did 7k more in the Turbo, had less (read no) rust, and over the extra mileage I put on over the S2 it cost me less to maintain. Why? The previous owners did alot of the work! It drove much better too! One day I'll do a blog against the two. I really felt like an idiot after I sold my S2. I soon forgot about that after I bought my Turbo. However, I felt like a tool when I sold the Turbo. £6.5k (which was considered pricey for a Turbo on 190k according to a few members on here who approached me) in 2014. I know for a fact it's worth probably double if not more now. After all, it was a rust free 951 250 running 290BHP, KWv3s, Porsche Big Blacks with new calipers all round, Hartech arms, 968 Castor mounts, new subframe mounts & fuel pipes, Michelins all round on 17" Cup 1s, New dashboard, new PAS lines, rebuilt head, LR Stage 1 Intercooler, New cooling system, Wortec exhaust, along with new wings and sills. Yes, I really was a fool to sell it then. But who knew what would happen? So, who wants to buy an E46 M3? Strangely, out of the first two cars I'd look at the first two on first impressions. But I'd want a smallish reduction. I've not seen that many 2.5 944s go for 5 figure sums ; that is S2/Turbo territory. |
