Just looking at fitting new tyres all around, what do people go for these days on the standard rims. I'm looking at:

Yokos
Contys
Bridgestone
Pirrelli

In that order at the moment.

there is more than one 'standard' wheel size depending the age and model of your car. Might be easiest if you tell us exactly what wheels you have and their size.

The 15" and 16" wheels have a fairly limited selection of tyres available these days.

Put hankook Ventus prime's on my s2 a couple of years ago...been really happy with them & they've hardly worn down over about 8k miles

I just had the same problem, same size tyres. None of the higher performance tyres were available for the rears. I ended up with Avon ZV-7s, as I have them in the daily and they've been good. Feel good to me on the 944but I've only done a few hundred miles and they're the first 16s I've had on the car, so can't compare to much.

Thanks for the replies, if I remember they need to be V Rated? Just had a look on Black Circles and they seem to have a wide range. Continentals seem to be available there:

Went with Pirelli P7s in the end.

Good choice, I have them on my cab, they are seen as noisey to some and I suppose they are but a fab tyre in both wet and dry. Reasonably priced too.

I went for Michelin Primacy last year. I wanted a good all round tyre and if I can afford it I generally go for Michelin or Continental first.

I thought this would be an easy one to choose! But you have some amazing choices for the fronts but less enamoring for the rear! But I have the same problem on a modern car to an extent! So let's get it over with!

If you do the odd the trackday and/or the car is a fair weather car get a set of Yokohama AD08Rs They are superb in the dry, not too bad in the wet and generally are pretty progressive!

Good all-rounders include the Continental PremiumContact 3, I've had the Michelin Primacy and my W124 is on Goodyear EfficientGrip Performances up front as was my MX-5 all round thanks to the previous owner. The latter is a superb tyre but the sidewall can roll on. Not as bad as the Uniroyal RainSport 3 but if you like a sharp turn-in the Yoko AD08R or possibly the Michelin may be a better bet.

I'd look at the options from Hankook too. Recently they have been fairing well against the big boys.

I'd like to suggest Avons but the ZV3s on my Alfa 147 were dreadful in the wet; it just drifted the front away on its own! They were OK in the dry but the iffy wet behaviour put me off them!

I think that Avons might age rather poorly. We have an SLK with ZV5s all round, but the fronts are about 4 years old, the rears 1. On a wet roundabout (North Warwick Jct on the A46 springs to mind) the fronts let go with very little provocation. Went from GoodYear Efficient Grip Performance to Avon ZV7's on the Mazda and the improvement was massive - steering became far more direct, less roll from the sidewalls, and surprisingly they were quieter. Still not a touch on the Michelin PS3's I had previously... can't justify those on the mileage car though.

I have yet to find the limits of the ZV7s on the 944. While I'm sure they're not a touch on the P7s I have no complaints so far, especially for the price... I'll update this if I find a hedge with them

I've been running Bridgestone S-02s for the last 5 years and they're grippy, quiet and wear very well. However in the wet its a different story, doesn't take too much to get them to break away.

That is interesting :). On the Alfa they were barely 2 years old. But yes, the Michelins for £15 more a corner were a worthy upgrade!

That is the one problem with the EfficientGrips ; the sidewalls are a little on the soft side, but they are great in the wet. It's a shame the Eagle F1 doesn't come in more sizes.

It's interesting where you are; I'm just up the road from yourself ;).

Yep, the sidewalls killed the EfficientGrips for me. Grip was there but car felt boaty.

I figured you weren't far away - you got a shout out in the last Kineton Classics email :)

I'm based in Warwick!

Mentioned in the Kineton email? You'll have to send me a copy! I'm perplexed now, since I've not met you and I can't think why I'd have got a mention in the email, albeit I've been once or twice this year. But it is a small world :).
