Post subject:  968 starts up, but won’t keep running without being revved

Houston, we have a problem! My 968 Sport is sick!
On the way to Llandudno for the PORSCHE on the Prom event yesterday, my car developed an issue. Whilst revving pretty hard in 2nd gear, I heard and felt a little ‘pop’ and judder.
The car continued and got me to the Prom ok, but when I came to drive back home there was a problem. :(

It fires up no problem. But will not keep running. If you give it some gas, it will keep running but it wants to stall if revs are left to fall below 1500 rpm or so. It’s lumpy as hell too.

It drives as if it’s been filled with kangaroo juice below 2200rpm, but accelerates and pulls fine after that. It had a new flywheel Just 6 weeks ago and was running like a dream before this

Any clues what the issue may be? Apologies for the somewhat non technical description!

Cheers

Massive air leak would be my guess, the pop was one of the hoses blowing off. Possibly one of those on the idle control valve.

Cheers Jim.
The pop did sound like it could be a hose popping off rather than the clutter of something metal flying off.

+1 for massive air leak. Ratified by the pop! Should be a very low cost repair!

Good luck.

yes it is

ICV "Idle Control Valve"

if it has got jammed or just gone pop,

when removed you should be able to see the valve half open that is the normal state

new ones are seriously expensive 944 606 161 01 £436.16 to you sir

if you want a cheaper alternative

look on ebay for Hyundai Lantra 2.0 ICV they are almost the same and about £35.00

As Waylander said ISV (idle stabilisation valve) = ICV. Very common problem on 993s.
A lot easier to get off and clean on a 993. Use carb cleaner and q-tips (enviro friendly ones pls.) You should be able to rattle the valve with a flick of the wrist.

A visit today to unit 11 and a quick diagnostic check with the old Bosch Hammer revealed a faulty MAF!!
Nice and easy to fix, so i’ve been in touch with the supplier as I only fitted a brand new one in November last year. A replacement is heading to me foc under the warranty.
Hooray!!!
