Post subject:  Advice on selling a 1983 Porsche 924
Hi

My Mother has a black 1983 Porsche 924 that she wants me to help sell for her. It's a non-runner but from what I can gather there's not a great deal wrong with it. It will turn over on the battery but not fire up. A friend of mine suspects it has old dirty fuel in the tank (which it surely will) and that it might need a new fuel pump. It has 98,000 miles on the clock.

Anyway, my instinct is to sell it on eBay but before I do that I thought I'd try and get a bit of advice from people who might know a thing or to about these things.

Does anybody have any suggestions of the best way to sell the car?

All input much appreciated.

I'll post a few pictures once I've figured out how to resize them to meet the file size limit.

Where are you and is the paintwork and interior/dash in good condition?

We are in Ely, which is about 15 miles north of Cambridge.

I don't have a reference point for what constitutes "good condition" when it comes to a old non-runner. I'll try and upload a couple of photographs with this post but in my opinion I wouldn't describe the interior or exterior as good condition. They both need some work I think.

looks decent for its age, Have you come to a decision on what price your looking for or is that something you want some help on?

your likely to make more if you can get someone in to get it running, although i would be wary of starting it and running it without first changing the oil. cars dont sit well so be careful

you may be able to get someone to look at it on the drive, for not a lot, i dont personally know the price of these cars but a running one with 98000 miles (i imagine very low mileage for these) is likely to fetch quite a lot more than a non runner

looking at autotrader these are going for up to £9k in the right condtion these days, althoguh im guessing that will depend a lot on engine size service history and such

Mechanical injection hates standing, so will need recommisioning.
Auto will put some off off but looks quite tidy.

Runner £1500- 2000
Runner with MoT £2000 upwards

It seems to me that I should at least make the effort to get it running again. If some new fuel and a fuel pump will at least get it ticking over then that could add a lot to the value it seems.

Anyway, thanks again for all of your input. It's pushed me towards spending a bit on it instead of just selling as a non-runner.

The fuel pump will only run when the engine is cranked, it does not run when the ignition is turned on. To check the pump, you need to pull the fuel pump relay and bridge it. If you don't know how to do this, ask away and I will try to help you.

FWIW, my Martini had been in a small collection for about 15 years, the owner just though it needed a fuel pump and a tune up to get it going!!

After he gave up it took me 2 years to get it to run properly, gummed up fuel systems, seized brakes and so on, as has been said, the k-jetronic does not like standing every little piece needed de gumming, don't underestimate the issues - and there are 2 fuel pumps in yours to gum up.

and it does not smell very nice either, I bought an Austin A35 that had been in a lockup from 1967 to 1982, that took ages to clean out thick brown stinky stuff everywhere
