New pistons or the originals? Planning to get my front calipers overhauled, but some places have shied away from doing the medium blacks.

Yes photofuckit indeed! Why post my images fine yesterday and then not today! @rseholes!

The pistons are original Pauly but the calipers are off a 993 although still have same 36mm/44mm pistons as standard M030, so mines are a bit newer. The pistons were in decent nick after a little tidy up.

Pics working fine for me. I remember Jon Mitchell saying it can cost plenty to refurb the calipers, something about the coating on the pistons?

They can expensive to refurbish, I suppose it depends what lengths you go to. My pistons just got a light tidy up on the faces as they were in decent order so wasn't going down the re-coat road, or indeed even knew about it! Got a new seal kit from Bigg Red for £42 delivered and the rest was TLC. The calipers were disassembled, plates removed, calipers and plates blasted, calipers powder coated and re-assembled with new seals and dust boots. New plate screws which were pennies. All corrosion removed and powder coating should prevent further plate lift in the future. Porsche lettering painted on. New wear sensors, new Pagids, didn't bother with shims, now bedded in, no noise and brakes feel best they have ever done.

Bigg Red was one of the places that said they don't do my calipers. If I get a compressor I'll probably strip them down myself.

How did you manage the plate removal? The screws on mine were a big job to remove, but they gave in eventually to various combos of chisel, blow torch and welder!

I have done 5 sets of calipers for various folks now, and by far the easiest way to get the bolts out is to Mig weld a 13mm nut on the top of them.

As Martin says. Weld a nut on but yes it can be a truly horrific task removing those screws.

Wish I’d known this from start! As soon as I switched to welding but on, it was ridiculously easy and fast to remove screws. Next time I’ll try that first!
