Post subject:  Axle stand placement, jacking advice

Apologies for asking basic questions, but I could do with some advice about the best spots for putting axles stands (front and rear) ?

I would like to get car off the deck (4 stands) for a bit of checking underneath, but got a bit concerned when one post I was reading mentioned needing some sort of safe zone under the car in case the stands slip

Had intended to use a scissor jack to lift each corner bit by bit, front first then the rear (didn't fancy trying to jack up one side whilst the other was balanced on 2 axle stands) and I'm not too familiar with trolley jacks and/or how they can be lowered slowly, or gently onto an axle stand?

Any advise about what rubber pad / jack pad to use on the scissor jack, since the top of the jack seems quite a small area to balance the car on.

Lifting the car is probably meat and drink (or nut loaf and drink) to most of you , but it would be helpful to make sure I don't make a complete horlicks of it by using wrong jack/wrong method, or put the stands in wrong place or places where they are likely to slip.

Any advice, gratefully received.

You can buy jack pads (just bought one from Design 911 for the Cayenne) but personally I wouldn't jack any old car on the jacking points.
On the 944 I jacked on the front on the rear suspension mount. On the rear on the torsion bar mount. Then I'd use an axle stand on the chassis rail with cardboard on top to protect the paint/underseal.

Thanks Jim

I assume you use a trolley jack? Not sure how easy it is to balance front suspension point on the small lifting area of a scissor jack to lift the car up, but will go it a go some time the next week or so when I have a few more bits.

thanks for your help

Jims picture is OK but as I said don't use sill based jacking points. And the crossmember in most cars will have an under tray bolted to it which will get in the way.
