Post subject:  Brake Refurb - sourcing the plastic sliders?
Does anyone know where I could source a set of the plastic sliders for the rear brake calipers without buying a full gasket kit from OPC?

The next big-ish job on my list is refurbishing the brakes. I've had quotes for gasket kits from Biggred and OPC. Biggred comes in significantly cheaper for new gaskets and pistons, vs just the gaskets from OPC, BUT biggred doesn't supply the plastic sliders for the rear brake calipers. I know I'm missing at least one of these, but can't find any to buy...

the trick is to find out who made the brakes, as I can guarantee it was not Porsche.

Bendix or Brembo or whoever, then track down a specialist retailer or service centre for those,

If they were 4 piston Brembo then Mode Performance would be a place to go, I can see the gasket kit in PET 928 352 941 00, £35.00 a side.

they must have been used on early 928's as well because of the part numbers

The brakes are FTE. I had a google for service centres but didn't find much. I did find that they have a UK office just down the road from me so I will pop them an email... Not massively hopeful about their support for 30 year old parts, but we'll see.

OPC gasket kits are £35 per side. Bigg Red do gaskets and piston for £26 per side - just not the sliders!

I'd seen those calipers in my googling too. Price seems far too good, I couldn't find much on the Budweg brand but also didn't find anything bad on them... Anyone had any experience with them? At that price they may well be worth a punt.

only if they come with the sliders ?

the FTE part number for the gasket set is RKS3605 for 36mm pistons Years 06.1981 - 07.1987

and for the fronts

RKS5450 54mm Pistons

Cheers again. That catalogue is very useful!

A quick google a few kits, all out of stick, but I'll give it a proper search later.

The refurbished calipers are a tempting proposition, especially for the fronts. £73 per side for a refurbished caliper plus mounting kit. Gaskets and mounting kit from OPC come to £68 per side.

If I bought refurbished fronts, I would want the same for rears, but they don't include the fitting kit.. So £66 for caliper + £51 for mounting kit per side. Plus cost of sending the old rear calipers back.

Buying refurbed total - £380, or £280 if I can clean up the current rear mounting kit to a degree I'm happy with.

DIY Refurb, buying gasket and mounting kits from OPC - £290. Then getting the calipers blasted and painted. And potentially the added cost of pistons if those need replacing.

May well be buying the the refurbished calipers - and I can stop worrying about sliders :lol:

Edit - Upon enquiry, front calipers are permanently out of stock. Well shucks.

Same for turbo front calipers I expect. I wonder what else fits easily that doesn't cost big bucks?

That explains all the nice cheap seal kits that don't include the sliders then.

Off topic, but we need some sort of list of all the non-porsche parts that work with our cars. Bits that work like the MK1 Golf control arms, and almost work like the VW Thing CV joints. I might start a thread, but my current list is rather small...

Back to breaks, I can't find a Porsche or FTE gasket kit in stock anywhere other than the US, and the postage wipes out any savings, so OPC it is. £90 for gasket kit for 4 corners and I'll see how it goes. I can't bring myself to spend £200 on new mounting kits, so I'll see how my old ones clean up... I remember a good thread on RetroRides where the OP got pretty good with yellow passivating his old parts. I may have to try and follow in his footsteps. (If memory serves it was sweetpea in his MR2 thread - could well be wrong though!)

Holy thread resurrection!

It seems it's taken me the best part of two years to get round to ordering brakes bits. What I have found out is that the Bigg Red kits don't have the plastic sliders, from pictures all the generic brand kits don't have the plastic sliders, but the ATE 11.0441-3601.2 kit does have the plastic sliders and can be had for around £16 per caliper at the time of writing instead of the ~£60 per caliper from OPC.
