Howdy,
Recently became the proud owner of a low mileage 1988 944 S. For the most part it is in good condition, body paint is a little rough though. As I bought this to hold on to as values are increasing, I am wondering if it will hurt the value of the car if I did a top grade repaint, meaning, striping down to metal, removing all glass, trim & giving it a top level repaint in its original color. There are those who would rather say that the car in its original condition is better. Question to you all, is should I do the repaint in original color or leave it with its 30 years of battle scars? your opinions are greatly appreciated.

Hi Mik,

Get it wrapped. Cheaper than getting it repainted and you can have your cake and eat it.

I wouldn't buy a wrapped car as it's un clear the condition underneath, wouldn't take it back to bear metal as well, new paints are thinner, repainted and then coated

Buying a 944 as an investment isn't the greatest of ideas, especially if you do a full glass out respray as I doubt you'd get your money back on that for years. Clean up what you have, sort any rust and respray only what you need to and enjoy driving it. The important thing is that it's solid and mechanically sound.

Never Wrap...it's a Porsche not some damn 'ricer' ...also as Terry stated don't take it back to bare metal either....ir you was to take it a a Porsche specialist they would tell you the same. Do what you feel happy with to get the car looking as you want...a good respray isn't going to devalue the car, it will increase it's value....after all we aren't talking some original Le Mans winning Ferrari are we? Do her up and drive her...944's are increasing in value and won't be stopping increasing anytime soon.

Paint it if it's what you want and it will make you enjoy the car more. I wouldn't expect it to add more value than the cost of the paint. But I suppose it depends how bad the paint is, how much you got it for and if you know somewhere you get the paint done at a good price.

Do you have any pics you can share?
Does anything else need doing to the bodywork (sills, arches, wings)?
Any chance the paint could be brought back with a polish?

The reason I'd recommend a wrap is because a decent paint job is going to cost more than the car is worth. A simple single colour wrap is going to cost a lot less and they do other colours other than Orange.

It will improve the look immediately and protect/hide what's underneath. Should values rise sufficiently in the future you will have a car left to paint.

I have a black car and had it resprayed because it wasn't going to cost a lot more to do the whole car, rather than just sills and wing bottoms. I got rid of all the scratches, dinks and fading. It is now 1 shade of black all over.

The downside is that it cost more than twice that of a wrap and not being a bare metal respray there are areas that could be better with more prep.

I had my 968 wrapped, it's originally black but I always wanted a (very rare) Mint Green one....

I've plenty of pictures of the car before it was wrapped & it can be returned back to original in a day if I so desired. It's a personal choice thing I suppose however one thing to consider...... You get what you pay for! My car looks as if it came from the factory green & even won a concourse prize at the 1st event I took it to.

I must admit that the quality of the wrap is probably the best I have seen. Your 968 had lots of admires at Silverstone. :bounce:
