I have a '92 944 S2 which has recently developed a ticking sound from the engine. It can be heard from inside the car on idle and the 'ticks' increase in speed as the revs increase.

The car had a new cambelt and service (new oil and plugs) about 6 months ago. It has a full tank of fresh 98 octane fuel and the DME is also new. The car doesn't get used much and since the service/cambelt it has done about a hundred miles.

I've read that it could be from the injectors which can be noisy on the S2 but I'm sure it wasn't as loud this before. Any ideas how to alleviate the problem or what else might be causing it before I take it to the garage to get checked out?

The first thing to do is to identify your problem. Ideally, use a mechanic's stethoscope, they can be had for a tenner.

If you haven't got a stethoscope then use the old trick of using a large flat bladed screwdriver to isolate the sound. Put the handle to your ear and hold the blade against where you think the sound is coming from.

Try placing the blade against each injector in turn. If the noise gets louder then that component is the one causing the problem.

If the injectors are all quiet, then try various points along the cam cover. It might be a noisy hydraulic tappet.

Once you know where the sound is coming from, people will be better placed to answer your problem.

Let it tick over for about 15-20 mins and I'm sure it will just shut up

Can take a long time for the tappets to refill and pressure up

Will agree with Waylander - a dry tappet bucket - check the oil is on max (sometimes an oil change can result in it not being so) before you start from cold. Run until warmed up and then do a long simple drive, it should clear.

Tappet is the most likely reason for this, particulalrly as you say the car hasn't been used much...

...also check the rotor arm / cap for possible contact - this can make a disconcerting noise.

My 944S developed a 'ticking' sound as well. It sounded rather like a marble hitting a hard floor. It increased with revs too. I discovered that it was the timing belt being slightly loose and flapping on the side that goes down to the crank pulley past the WP guide. It was happening because I too had replaced the belts recently and had not gotten around to checking the belt tension - as you should after a while! Basically, the new belt had stretched a bit (as it would), and needed a re-tension. So, I did this and the noise went away... result. Might be worth checking this, as it could be the problem. Screwdriver or 'scope the front belt cover at the top.
