Just put a new starter on my 944 only to discover that somewhere along the lines the wiring is playing up and not firing up the starter. All I get is a click from the Air Conditioning relay which closes the switch (is this normal?).

It looks like it's either a duff ignition switch or the alarm has an immobiliser which is playing up.

I can get the starter to fire up if I bridge the connector by the firewall straight to the battery but it seems like the fuel pump is also dead, never rains but it pours.

Any suggestions of what else could be causing this?

i'd pull the ignition plug and bridge that out, if that doesnt help then the first thing i'd look at are none oem items like immobs or alarms.

maybe look at a circuit diagram and trace voltages to see where it stops...

Just had the fuel pump off and it's completely dead, going to get a replacement and the hose from pump to filter before I get any further.

Think I'll look into the electric problem again after I know the engine is capable of running.

do the pump first and see - i had a fiat that wouldnt crank unless the pump was running.... so it could be the pump stopping it cranking.

also check the earth strap to the engine...

On the early 944 models you have to get all 12 volts to the starter or nothing! Change the back part of the ignition switch as they fail quite often!
