My headlights work on main beam and dipped but the main beam warning light does not come on. I have checked continuity on the bulb so the bulb seems ok. I have recently changed the battery- could this have anything todo with it? Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Sounds like a relay issue. If the bulb and the lights work then its something to do with sending that signal back to your bulb, hence giving me the relay feeling or stalk connection! Somebody will be along shortly to poopoo or clarify the relay possibility.
