Post subject:  Who loves the sound of their four-pot?
There seems to be an accepted truth these days that 4 cylinder engines don't sound any good. This seems especially prevalent at the moment in discussion of the 718. It may have been tongue in cheek but a recent PH comparison vid seemed to suggest that it was not possible to have fun at all in a 718 because of the engine sound.

So today I took the S2 out for a run and it struck me how much I love the roar of the engine as it revs up, and it is certainly fun. Am I the only one? Ok I can see that the idle sound is not quite as heart stopping as the rumble of a V8 and that a flat 6 has a sound of its own and has great appeal. But that doesn't mean all 4 cylinder engines sound bad.

Am I really on my own or is this a myth that should be debunked?

Unfortunately we don't have that glorious induction noise you used to get on the Rally escorts (Roger Clarke etc.) but I agree wot over 4k with Dansk sport exhaust makes those old ladies in their Micras jump. Can't beat a Ducati on Termis though (irresponsible idiot looks) and that's only 2 pots.

Love it caprixpack! Unfortunately my car has a rattling heat sheild which means the idle sound is nowhere near as good as yours. I'm hoping to get it sorted in the next couple of weeks.

I have both an 8v 2.5 and 16v 3.0 and as with many multi valve engines the sound of the 3.0 is rubbish compared to my 2.5

The 928s are the same

Shame really as i would like the more powerful car to sound it

I've had an S2 and a Turbo.

While I liked the sound of my S2 for a 4 banger the Turbo was something else. I'll see if I can get a video up :).

I've got the old twin back box off WUF on my turbo, it drowns out the Dansk I had fitted before :D .

That's interesting JasonGibson, shows there's more to the engine sound than number of cylinders. Personally I love the sound of my S2. Thinking about the last time I had a non-16v car was my first - a 1.0 Vauxhall Nova, so I suppose it depends what you're comparing to. Also, last time I was up close to a 928 it sounded awesome and that was a late model. So I guess some of it must be in ear of the beholder.

I remember Chris Kenward getting X-Pipes fitted to his GTS and it came back quieter.
Apparently the exhaust manifold was blowing before :lol:

I adore the sound of my engine since is last big upgrade two years ago, it's burble is very noticeable with the odd 'POP' and you can see people's heads turn a fair distance away as I coast down the highstreet. Induction noise is very noticeable with the large cone filter mounted outside of the engine bay and the loud Whoosh after each gear change or lift off throttle is most enjoyable, it awakens the kid in me...:) I've always enjoyed driving my car over my near 18 years of ownership but for the last two years I've enjoyed how she sounds too...:)

Hi Paul

I have one although it's not a very good one, IIRC I also modified some ducting below to direct max air towards the cylinder but can't remember the details I'm afraid...the only downside is that you may need to clean the filter more often than K&N state. This was the largest filter that I could fit, again IIRC the filter is 6" with connecting tubing of 3" which just fits through the wing opening designed for the original snorkel box filter although as you know that was a lot smaller ID.

This is the closest image that I have showing the layout of the tubing in the engine bay, just off screen is the MAF unit which connects to a silicone hose, then you are outside to the angled alloy tubing that fits into the filter.

I keep meaning to make a proper bracket to secure the filter but it's one of those 'to do' lists which seems to grow quicker than I can tick them off...:)

Be very,very careful going through flood water. My son's Lux drowned the engine with the std intake.
